Rex and Mara came back from where they went to count how many wolves Volktor came with before dark.
I saw them at the edge of camp while I was finishing the evening food distribution, and something in the way Rex was walking told me the news was not going to be easy, and it might even be harder than I thought, even before he said anything. I handed the last portion of the food to Pell and went to meet them before they reached the center of camp.
"How many are they?" I asked.
" We were able to confirm forty," Rex said. "Possibly more than that, in the trees where I could not get a clean count on and the ones I couldn't reach."
