I sat on the edge of the bed and watched Freda sleep.
The sun was just starting to hit the floorboards of the bedroom. She looked small under the heavy blankets, but I kept seeing her in the clearing with her jaws locked on Viktor's neck.
My chest was wrapped in tight bandages and every breath I took felt like a dull poke from a stick, but I was alive.
I stood up and walked to the window. My legs felt heavy. I was angry that she had to step into that circle. It was my job to protect the pack and it was my job to keep her safe.
Instead, I had been lying in the dirt watching my mate fight a man twice her size. It made my blood feel hot in my veins. But I was proud too. She had done what no one else expected.
"You should be resting," Freda said. Her voice was scratchy from sleep.
I turned around. She was sitting up now, pushing her hair out of her face.
"I have rested enough," I said.
