Viktor opened his mouth wide. I could see the spit on his teeth and the dark red of his gums. He was looking at Urdon's throat like it was a piece of steak. My feet moved before my brain could tell them to stop. I did not care about the regional laws. I did not care about the crossbows. I just knew that if I waited another second, Urdon was a dead man.

 

I jumped. I didn't have my knife anymore because Rex had made me drop it, but I had my hands and I had my weight. I hit Viktor's side with my shoulder. He was heavy, like a stone wall, but he was not expecting it. He slid a few inches across the bloody floorboards and his jaws snapped shut on empty air.

 

"Get off him!" I shouted.
