Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 – Choose Me… Or Lose Me“STOP!”

Rachel's voice cracked through the ruined mansion like thunder.

But the war machine didn't listen.

Its weapons were fully charged.

Locked.

On Daniel.

"Hidden directive active: eliminate emotional weakness."

Daniel stood frozen.

Confused.

Terrified.

"Rach…?"

Raziel moved instantly, stepping in front of him.

"Get behind me."

Rachel's heart shattered.

"No… no no NO!"

The machine's core flared.

Blinding light.

Energy building.

Seconds away from firing.

Rachel ran forward.

"Machine! CANCEL COMMAND!"

Nothing.

No response.

Just a cold hum.

"Command priority: absolute."

Victor Kane's voice came softly from behind.

"Your father built a failsafe."

Rachel turned sharply.

"What did you do?!"

Victor shrugged slightly.

"I didn't do anything."

His smile darkened.

"He made sure you would never choose emotion over power."

Rachel's blood ran cold.

"No…"

Raziel shouted,

"RACHEL! FOCUS!"

The machine's weapons began to fire

Rachel screamed.

"OVERRIDE!!!"

Nothing.

Then

BOOOOOOM!!!

A blast went off

But not from the machine.

Raziel had fired first.

At the machine.

Sparks exploded from its side.

Its aim shifted slightly.

The blast missed Daniel

By inches.

The wall behind him disintegrated.

Daniel dropped to the ground, shaking.

Rachel's heart pounded wildly.

"Raziel…!"

He didn't look at her.

"Shut it down NOW!"

"I CAN'T!"

The machine recalibrated instantly.

Weapons locking again.

This time

Faster.

Deadlier.

Rachel's hands trembled.

Her mind racing.

Think.

Think.

THINK.

Then

Her father's voice echoed in her memory.

"If the machine ever turns against what matters… destroy it."

Rachel froze.

Destroy it?

Her chest tightened.

Everything they fought for.

Everything she just gained.

Gone?

"No…" she whispered.

Raziel's voice cut through.

"Rachel."

She looked at him.

And everything slowed.

Fire.

Chaos.

War.

All fading.

Just him.

His eyes.

Steady.

Real.

"Choose," he said quietly.

Her breath hitched.

"I can't…"

"Yes, you can."

The machine charged again.

Seconds.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

Then back at Raziel.

Tears filled her eyes.

"If I destroy it… we lose everything."

Raziel stepped closer.

"No."

He shook his head.

"You don't lose everything."

His hand reached for hers.

"You still have me."

Silence.

Heavy.

Powerful.

Rachel's heart cracked open.

The machine's voice echoed again.

"Final strike ready."

Raziel didn't move.

Didn't flinch.

"If you don't do it…" he said softly,

"…then I will."

Rachel's eyes widened.

"No!"

"I won't let it kill him."

The gun in his hand lifted slightly.

Rachel grabbed his shirt.

"Don't you dare."

Their faces were close now.

Too close.

Breathing the same air.

Sharing the same fear.

Same chaos.

Same everything.

"Rachel…" his voice dropped,

"…look at me."

She did.

And for a second

Everything else disappeared.

No war.

No machine.

No enemies.

Just them.

"You're not your father," he said.

"You're not that thing."

His hand gently touched her face.

"You're you."

Rachel's breath trembled.

"And I"

He stopped.

Then said it.

Clear.

Raw.

"I choose you."

That broke her.

Completely.

Her lips crashed against his.

Not soft.

Not slow.

Desperate.

Needing.

Like if they stopped, everything would end.

Raziel didn't hesitate.

He pulled her closer.

Like she was the only thing keeping him grounded.

The only thing worth fighting for.

Fire burned around them.

But in that moment

Nothing else mattered.

Rachel's hands tightened on his shirt.

"I don't want to lose you…"

Her voice barely above a whisper.

Raziel rested his forehead against hers.

"You won't."

Another blast charged behind them.

Reality snapped back.

Rachel pulled away slightly.

Breathing hard.

Eyes clearer now.

Focused.

Certain.

Decision made.

She turned.

Facing the machine.

Her voice was calm now.

Deadly.

Final.

"Self-destruct protocol."

The machine froze.

"Command recognized."

Raziel's eyes widened.

"Rachel!"

She didn't look back.

"Authorization: Rachel Moretti."

Silence.

Then

"Confirmed."

The machine's core began to overload.

Energy spiraling out of control.

Victor Kane stepped back.

"Interesting choice…"

Rachel didn't care.

Raziel grabbed her hand.

"WE HAVE TO MOVE!"

The mansion began collapsing.

Walls cracking.

Ceiling falling.

Fire spreading everywhere.

They ran.

Together.

Daniel behind them.

Lucien shouting something in the distance.

Everything falling apart.

And behind them

The war machine.

Their power.

Their advantage.

Their weapon.

Exploded.

BOOOOOOOOM!!!

The shockwave threw them forward.

Rachel hit the ground hard.

Raziel shielded her.

Dust.

Fire.

Silence.

Slowly

She opened her eyes.

The mansion was gone.

The machine was gone.

Everything…

Gone.

Rachel's chest rose and fell.

Tears slipped down her face.

"…I destroyed it."

Raziel pulled her into his arms.

"You saved him."

She buried her face in his chest.

"…but now we have nothing."

He held her tighter.

"You still have me."

She looked up at him.

Eyes soft.

Broken.

But alive.

And for the first time since everything began

Rachel smiled.

Just a little.

Behind them…

In the smoke.

In the shadows.

A figure stood.

Watching.

Unharmed.

The First Experiment.

And beside it

Victor Kane.

Smiling.

Victor's voice was low.

"She chose emotion."

The First Experiment tilted its head.

"…good."

Victor's smile widened.

"Now she's exactly where we want her."

The smoke refused to clear.

It hung in the air like a memory that wouldn't leave.

Rachel's ears rang softly as she lay there, half-buried in dust and broken stone. Her fingers were still clutching Raziel's shirt, like letting go would mean losing him completely.

For a few seconds…

Nothing moved.

No machine.

No enemies.

Just silence.

Then

Daniel coughed.

"Rach…?"

Rachel's eyes snapped open fully.

She pushed herself up immediately.

"Daniel!"

He was sitting a few feet away, shaking, covered in dust but alive.

Alive.

Rachel didn't think.

She crawled to him and pulled him into her arms tightly.

"I'm here… I'm here…"

Her voice broke.

"You're okay… you're okay…"

Daniel hugged her back just as tight.

"I thought I was going to die…"

Rachel closed her eyes.

"…not on my watch."

Raziel stood slowly behind them, brushing dust off his shoulders. His eyes moved across the ruins, scanning.

Calculating.

Something wasn't right.

Lucien staggered over, coughing.

"…next time we fight, can we pick somewhere less… explosive?"

No one laughed.

Because something still felt wrong.

Too quiet.

Too empty.

Rachel slowly stood up, still holding Daniel's hand.

Her chest tightened.

"The machine…"

Gone.

Completely gone.

No remains.

No parts.

Nothing.

Like it never existed.

Her power.

Her advantage.

Her father's legacy.

Gone.

Raziel watched her carefully.

"You did what you had to."

Rachel shook her head slightly.

"But now we're exposed…"

Her voice dropped.

"…we're weak."

A slow clap echoed through the smoke.

Rachel's body went rigid.

"No…"

Victor Kane stepped forward first.

Unharmed.

Untouched.

Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.

"I must say…"

He smiled.

"That was beautiful."

Rachel's eyes darkened instantly.

"You planned this."

Victor tilted his head.

"Planned?"

He chuckled.

"No… I predicted it."

The First Experiment stepped out behind him.

Still standing.

Still watching.

Still terrifying.

Rachel's fists clenched.

"You wanted me to destroy it."

Victor's smile widened.

"Of course."

Silence hit.

Hard.

Raziel's voice came low.

"…why?"

Victor looked at Rachel.

Because she was the center of it all.

"Because power without control is dangerous."

Rachel snapped back.

"And now I have neither."

Victor shook his head slowly.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"Now… you are controllable."

That hit differently.

Rachel's heart skipped.

"I will never be under you."

Victor smiled.

"You already are."

Before anyone could react

The First Experiment moved.

Fast.

Faster than before.

It grabbed Daniel.

Again.

This time

No hesitation.

"No!" Rachel screamed.

She ran forward

But it was too late.

The figure vanished.

Gone.

With Daniel.

Silence.

Dead.

Cold.

Rachel froze.

Her entire body went numb.

"…Daniel?"

Nothing.

No answer.

No sound.

No presence.

Gone.

Raziel's voice dropped.

"Rachel…"

She didn't respond.

Her breathing slowed.

Too slow.

Dangerously slow.

Victor watched her closely.

This was the moment.

The breaking point.

"You chose him over power…"

His voice was soft.

Mocking.

"And now he's gone anyway."

Rachel's head slowly tilted.

"…bring him back."

Victor raised a brow.

"Or what?"

That was it.

Something snapped again.

But this time

Different from before.

Not wild.

Not unstable.

Cold.

Focused.

Terrifying.

Rachel looked up.

And for the first time

There were no tears.

No fear.

Just something darker.

"Or I end you."

Raziel felt it.

That shift.

That change.

This wasn't the same Rachel from before.

This one?

Was calm.

Too calm.

Victor smiled.

"Now that… is the version of you I was waiting for."

Rachel stepped forward slowly.

The ground beneath her cracked slightly.

Even without the machine.

Her presence alone felt heavy.

"You said I'm controllable."

Her voice was quiet.

"But you made one mistake."

Victor tilted his head.

"Oh?"

Rachel stopped.

Right in front of him.

"You took the only thing that makes me human."

Silence.

Raziel's eyes widened slightly.

He understood.

Rachel continued

"So now…"

Her eyes locked onto Victor's.

"…you deal with what's left."

Lucien whispered under his breath.

"…yeah we're finished."

Victor laughed softly.

"Good."

He stepped back.

"Then come find me."

Rachel didn't hesitate.

"I will."

The First Experiment's voice echoed faintly from the shadows

"Find us… if you can."

And then

They were gone.

Completely.

No trace.

No signal.

Nothing.

Rachel stood there.

Still.

Quiet.

Raziel walked up behind her slowly.

"Rachel…"

She didn't turn.

"Don't."

Her voice stopped him.

Not harsh.

But firm.

"I need to think."

Silence stretched between them.

Heavy.

Painful.

Then

She finally spoke again.

"They took him because of me."

Raziel shook his head.

"No. They took him because they're afraid of you."

Rachel laughed softly.

Empty.

"Afraid?"

She turned slightly.

Eyes cold.

"I just destroyed my only weapon."

Raziel stepped closer anyway.

"You're still the most dangerous person here."

Rachel looked at him.

Long.

Quiet.

Then she said something that hit deeper than anything else

"Then why couldn't I protect him?"

That broke something in Raziel.

He reached for her.

This time

She didn't pull away.

He pulled her into him again.

Tighter.

Stronger.

"You will."

Rachel's voice was low against his chest.

"No…"

She closed her eyes.

"…I won't just protect him."

She pulled back slightly.

Her gaze now burning.

"I'm going to get him back."

Raziel nodded once.

"I'm with you."

Rachel held his gaze.

"Even if it gets ugly?"

His answer was immediate.

"It already is."

A small pause.

Then

She leaned in again.

Kissed him.

Softer this time.

Not desperate.

Not broken.

But certain.

A promise.

Then she pulled away.

And said the words that changed everything

"Then let's burn everything down."
