Chapter 22 - Chapter 22 — Breathing That Carries Forward

Month: Late August

Year: Taishō 13

Age:

Akira — 8

Mitsuri — 8

Location: Azabu District — riverbank paths, clinic, hidden training spaces

---

Late Summer — Heat That No Longer Weighs

The heat of late summer pressed down on Azabu, thick and lingering.

Yet Akira moved through it as if it were only another condition to adjust for.

Total Concentration Breathing no longer felt like something he activated.

It lived in him now.

While chopping vegetables at the clinic kitchen, his breath stayed deep and even. While carrying heavy crates of supplies, his posture never collapsed. Even while standing still, talking with patients, his body remained alert—warm, balanced.

> "Total Concentration maintained during routine activities: 47 minutes."

Akira exhaled slowly.

Still improving.

---

Mitsuri — Watching Without Trying

Mitsuri noticed everything.

Not in a sharp, analytical way—more like how one noticed the weather.

Akira's shoulders didn't rise when he inhaled.

His steps never dragged.

Even when tired, his eyes stayed clear.

She tried copying him once.

Failed immediately.

"…It's different," she muttered.

So she stopped copying.

Instead, she moved how her body wanted—light steps, wide turns, flexible motions that flowed into each other.

Her breathing followed naturally.

And without realizing it, she began holding it longer.

---

Clinic — Where Breathing Meets Healing

A boy collapsed from heat exhaustion that afternoon.

Akira knelt beside him instantly.

"Slow," he said calmly, placing a hand over the boy's chest. "Follow my count."

In.

Two.

Out.

Three.

The boy's shaking eased.

The doctor watched closely this time.

"…That wasn't instinct," he said afterward. "That was control."

Akira wiped his hands. "Breathing affects circulation. If it's steady, recovery is faster."

The doctor studied him for a long moment.

"You're treating breathing like medicine."

Akira tilted his head. "…Is that strange?"

"No," the doctor replied quietly. "It's rare."

---

Hidden Clearing — Mitsuri's Secret Continues

Mitsuri trained at dusk now.

Not every day—but often enough that her body remembered.

Her movements had themes.

A wide step followed by a twist.

A turn that ended in a soft stop.

An arm motion that curved rather than cut.

She repeated them slowly.

Breathing stayed smooth—even joyful.

Warmth spread through her limbs, but she never overheated.

"…Why does this feel easy?" she whispered.

She didn't know.

But her body did.

---

Evening Walk — Quiet Honesty

They walked together as usual.

Crickets chirped loudly now, summer beginning to lean toward autumn.

Akira glanced at her. "You're breathing differently."

Mitsuri blinked. "I am?"

"Yes. Longer exhales."

She thought for a moment. "…It feels nice."

Akira nodded. "That means it suits you."

She smiled, bright and unguarded. "You always say things like that."

He shrugged slightly. "Because it's true."

They walked closer than before—shoulders nearly touching.

---

Night — Refinement

Akira trained late.

No sword tonight.

Just breathing.

Seated, spine straight, hands resting loosely.

In.

Out.

> "High-output Total Concentration sustainable for limited bursts. Recommend restraint."

"I know," Akira whispered. "I'm still growing."

Across the district, Mitsuri lay on her futon, staring at the ceiling.

Her muscles felt pleasantly tired.

Her heart felt light.

She traced the sakura pendant with her fingers.

"…Akira," she murmured softly, as if testing how the name felt in the quiet.
