January, Meiji 35 (1902)
Age: Akira & Mitsuri — 11 years, 7 months
---
Winter settled fully over Azabu.
Snow had not yet fallen, but the cold clung stubbornly to every surface, turning breath into pale clouds and stiffening fingers before dawn.
Akira welcomed it.
Cold sharpened control.
Cold punished mistakes.
He stood in the familiar clearing as the sky lightened slowly, gourd secured, breath already aligned. His body no longer searched for Total Concentration—it assumed it.
Total Concentration Breathing — Constant.
The gourd creaked softly.
Not a challenge.
A reminder.
Akira moved through his routine with precision: footwork drills, controlled strikes, then a short sequence of Hinokami Kagura—only the first three forms, perfectly clean, perfectly restrained.
When he finished, he noticed he was not alone.
Mitsuri stood a short distance away, wrapped in her scarf, eyes shining.
"You're done already?" she asked.
"For today," he replied, loosening the strap. "My body needs time to settle."
She nodded… then took a step forward.
"Can I… try something?" she asked carefully.
Akira studied her.
"You don't need permission," he said gently. "Just don't push."
She smiled, nervous but excited, and stepped into the clearing.
Mitsuri inhaled.
Deep.
Long.
Her breathing was different now—softer at the start, longer at the end. Instead of compressing power inward like Akira's, it spread, flowing through her limbs as warmth rather than heat.
Her body responded instantly.
She moved.
Not fast.
Not slow.
Fluid.
Her step curved outward, hips rotating smoothly as her blade followed in a wide, elegant arc—like a ribbon caught in the wind.
Akira's eyes widened slightly.
It's stabilized.
No wasted motion.
No strain.
She completed the movement and spun lightly on her heel, scarf fluttering.
"…That felt right," she murmured.
She inhaled again.
---
Unnamed Form — First Attempt
A forward step, then a sweeping diagonal cut that bent mid-motion, her arms extending further than seemed possible. Her muscles stretched elastically, not resisting—embracing the motion.
She stopped, blinking.
"…That was pretty," she said, surprised.
Akira laughed softly. "That's one way to judge it."
Mitsuri tilted her head, thinking. "It felt… loving? Like I didn't want to hurt anything, just… wrap around it."
She paused.
Then her eyes lit up.
"…Love."
Akira stilled.
"Love?"
She nodded, growing more confident as she spoke. "My breathing feels warm, and gentle, and strong at the same time. Not sharp like yours. So maybe… Love Breathing?"
The words hung in the cold air.
They felt right.
Akira smiled. "If that's what it feels like to you… then that's its name."
Mitsuri beamed.
She inhaled again, excitement bubbling over.
---
Love Breathing — First Form: Shivers of First Love
Her movement flowed forward—soft at first, then suddenly expansive. The blade traced a wavering path, deceptive and flexible, her body bending and twisting gracefully to extend reach without losing balance.
She stopped abruptly, eyes wide.
"I named it!" she laughed. "Is that silly?"
Akira shook his head. "No. It fits you."
Encouraged, Mitsuri tried again.
---
Love Breathing — Second Form: Love Pangs
A spinning step, faster this time. Her blade circled her body in a wide arc, momentum carried by her breath rather than muscle force. She nearly lost balance—but corrected instinctively, laughter spilling from her lips.
She bent over, hands on knees, breathing steadily.
"…I'm not tired," she said, surprised. "At all."
Akira crouched beside her. "That's exactly why you stop now."
She nodded obediently, sitting beside him in the frost-damp grass.
As they rested, Akira observed quietly.
Her breathing didn't compress power.
It distributed it.
No backlash.
No stiffness.
Her body was built for this.
"Great Sage: Confirmation—Mitsuri Kanroji has successfully developed a personalized breathing style. Structural efficiency exceeds baseline expectations. Risk factor: low, provided emotional excitement does not override restraint."
Akira exhaled slowly.
She really did it.
Without being taught.
Without realizing the weight of what she'd named.
Mitsuri leaned back, staring at the pale winter sky.
"…Akira?"
"Yes?"
"Is it okay that mine feels so different from yours?"
He answered without hesitation. "It should be."
She smiled softly at that.
Later that day, Akira returned to his own training—gourd work intensified, breath output raised carefully. His body responded faster than ever, strength and endurance climbing in visible steps rather than gradual lines.
The doctor noticed.
Shopkeepers noticed.
Even adults began pausing when he passed.
Akira ignored it.
What mattered was this—
That morning.
That breath.
That smile.
As dusk fell, Mitsuri walked him partway home.
"I think I want to make more forms," she said quietly. "Not now. Just… someday."
He nodded. "You will."
She looked at him, eyes warm and trusting. "You'll watch, right?"
He smiled. "Always."
Under the winter sky, two different breaths moved forward—
one like the sun,
the other like a gentle, endless warmth.
Both growing.
Both real.
