Chapter 21 - CHAPTER 21

CHAPTER 21, THE FRAGMENTS OF MYSELF

The whispers didn't fade even after the corridor emptied.

They clung to the walls like an echo that refused to disappear, crawling under the skin of anyone who had heard them. Fear had a way of lingering—and today, it had settled deep into the bones of the school.

Jay stood still for a long moment after the unconscious boy was taken away.

His eyes hadn't left that spot.

The image was burned into his mind—the wide, frozen eyes… the terror that didn't belong to something physical. There were no wounds. No bruises. No signs of struggle.

And that made it worse.

Because whatever had happened…

It hadn't needed to touch him.

"…This is connected," Jay murmured under his breath.

Inside the silence of his mind, the shadow answered.

"Yes."

Jay's jaw tightened slightly.

His fingers curled into a fist at his side.

"…Then it's already started."

No reply came this time.

It didn't need to.

The truth had already settled in.

"Jay."

The voice snapped him back.

He turned.

Aisha stood a few steps away, her expression uneasy, her eyes searching him carefully.

"Do you know what happened?" she asked.

Jay looked at her for a moment.

There was concern in her voice.

Real concern.

He hesitated.

"…No," he said.

Not a full lie.

But not the truth either.

Aisha studied him for another second, as if trying to read something deeper beneath his calm surface. Then she nodded slightly.

"Everyone's scared," she said quietly.

"They're saying something attacked him… but there's no injury at all."

Jay glanced back toward the empty space again.

"…Yeah."

That was exactly the problem.

The rest of the day moved strangely.

Classes continued.

Teachers spoke.

Lessons were taught.

But no one was truly present.

Every sound felt distant.

Every movement felt off.

The normal rhythm of the school had been broken.

And everyone could feel it.

Jay sat at his desk in silence.

His gaze fixed forward.

But his mind was elsewhere.

Every small sound—chairs moving, whispers, footsteps—felt amplified.

Because now—

He wasn't just aware.

He was waiting.

"You're expecting it," the shadow said calmly.

Jay didn't respond aloud.

Yes.

A pause.

"Then you're already behind."

Jay's eyes narrowed slightly.

Why?

"Because you're reacting," the shadow replied.

"Not acting."

That hit.

Jay exhaled slowly.

It was true.

He was waiting for something to happen.

Letting the situation control him.

Then what should I do?

The answer came instantly.

"Move first."

Jay's fingers tightened slightly on the desk.

Move first.

That meant stepping into the unknown.

Taking control.

Finding them—

Before they found him.

The final bell rang.

The sharp sound echoed through the room.

Students rushed to leave.

Faster than usual.

No one wanted to stay behind.

Jay stood up slowly.

Aisha glanced at him.

"Are you going home?" she asked.

Jay shook his head.

"Not yet."

Her expression tightened with worry.

"…Be careful."

Jay didn't answer.

But he gave a small nod.

Within minutes, the school emptied.

Corridors that had once been full of noise now stood silent.

Still.

Almost abandoned.

Perfect.

Jay walked alone through the hallway.

His footsteps echoed softly.

Each step measured.

Each breath controlled.

"…Come out," he said quietly.

Nothing.

He stopped.

Closed his eyes.

Focused inward.

"Don't call them," the shadow said.

"Feel them."

Jay adjusted his breathing.

Slow.

Steady.

He let his senses extend beyond the physical.

Beyond sight.

Beyond sound.

And then—

He felt it.

A faint disturbance.

Subtle.

But undeniable.

Not in front.

Not behind.

Above.

Jay's eyes snapped open.

He looked up.

The ceiling.

Still.

Silent.

But something was there.

A distortion.

Like heat bending the air.

Barely visible.

But real.

"…Found you," Jay whispered.

The moment those words left his mouth—

It moved.

Fast.

The distortion dropped from the ceiling—

Taking form mid-air—

A shadow—

But not like before.

This one was sharper.

More defined.

More stable.

Jay reacted instantly.

He stepped back.

Just in time.

The thing landed where he had been standing.

Silently.

For a moment—

Neither of them moved.

"…You came looking," it said.

Its voice was still layered—

But clearer now.

Stronger.

Jay's eyes flickered red.

"…You attacked that boy."

A pause.

Then—

"…He was weak."

Jay's expression hardened.

"That doesn't answer my question."

The thing tilted its head.

"…It does."

The air grew heavier.

Then—

It moved.

Straight toward him.

Jay didn't hesitate.

He stepped forward.

This time—

He didn't dodge.

He didn't defend.

He attacked.

His fist moved fast—

Precise—

Controlled—

And—

It connected.

For a fraction of a second—

There was resistance.

Something solid.

Then—

The entity staggered back.

Silence.

Both of them froze.

Jay looked at his hand.

"…I hit it."

The entity stared at him.

Its form flickering violently now.

"…Impossible…"

Inside—

The shadow spoke calmly.

"You're synchronizing."

Jay's eyes sharpened.

"…Good."

The entity steadied itself.

"…So you're different."

A pause.

"…Not like the others."

Jay stepped forward again.

"Tell me what you are."

The entity didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"…We are what remains."

Jay's breath slowed.

"Remains of what?"

A long pause.

"…Of you."

Everything went silent.

Jay's mind froze.

"…What?"

But the entity didn't explain further.

Instead—

It smiled.

A twisted, unnatural expression.

"…Find the others," it said.

"…if you want the truth."

And then—

It vanished.

Gone.

Just like that.

The hallway returned to silence.

Jay stood there alone.

His heart steady.

But his thoughts racing.

"…Remains of me…"

Inside—

The shadow confirmed it.

"Yes."

Jay clenched his fist slowly.

"…Then this isn't just a fight."

A pause.

"…It's a recovery."

For the first time—

The situation became clear.

These weren't just enemies.

They were fragments.

Pieces.

Parts of something that once belonged to him.

Which meant—

Every encounter wasn't just a battle.

It was a step toward becoming whole.

But that also meant something else.

Something far more dangerous.

If those fragments had their own will…

Their own purpose…

Then not all of them would want to return.

And somewhere—

Far away—

In a place untouched by light—

Something stirred.

Something that had been silent for a very long time.

Because now—

It had felt him.

And unlike the others—

This one—

Didn't need to search.

It already knew where Jay was.

And soon—

It would come. 🔥👁️
