Chapter 83 - A Truth Left Unspoken

Jun Kai was still studying Jin Yue when a faint glow drifted along the river.

At first it looked like nothing more than reflected lantern light. But as it floated closer, the shape became clearer.

A small river lantern.

Then another.

And another.

Dozens of them moved slowly along the current, their thin paper shells glowing softly against the dark water. The lanterns bobbed gently as they traveled beneath the bridge, carrying quiet prayers and memories with them.

Jin Yue's gaze followed them.

Jun Kai noticed immediately.

"You know what those are for?" Jun Kai asked.

Jin Yue nodded faintly.

"For the dead."

The capital held many customs during festival seasons. While the city celebrated loudly above the streets, people along the river honored those who had already departed.

Jun Kai watched another lantern drift past.

Then he pushed himself away from the railing.

"Wait here."

Jin Yue glanced at him but did not ask where he was going.
