Chapter 75 - Monarch

Jasper felt the cool air of the night race across his skin as he plummeted towards the ground. He wasn't upset with Warden for figuring out that he had a True Name. He had planned to tell their leader eventually anyway.

In truth, he was more embarrassed and more than a little ashamed to have been given such a staggering reward in the first place.

From what they knew of those with true names, it was those who had given so much and had done such great things and would go on to do even more as time went on.

All the others, Warden of Valor, Nightwalker, Immortal Flame were the new paragons of humanity in one way or another. They were the leaders of the most powerful factions and had accomplished amazing things to earn such a title.

Yet here he was, a young awakened who, in all honesty, didn't do anything outstanding during his time as a sleeper. He had killed countless creatures along his travels with Damian and the others, but nothing that made him stand out.

In all honesty, he felt like the honour of a True Name was far too grand for him, that he had somehow stolen away that reward from someone far more deserving, from Damian.

After he had received his own during the ascension, he was sure that many others would have as well, assuming it was a common thing that all awakened would receive, only to have this idea crushed after he managed to calm Damian's rage after the gateway rejected them.

When Warden and the others eventually returned, it almost broke him a little. He knew he didn't deserve this, and yet he had no choice but to accept it as part of who he was now, or maybe was always meant to be.

Just before he hit the stone paths beneath him, he positioned his feet towards the ground as a thunderous force erupted from his heels, breaking the impact of his fall as he landed on the stones unharmed.

The streets around this area had long since been cleared of Nightmare creatures, yet you could never be too cautious in the age of Nightmares. Summoning his trusty dagger as he walked towards his and Damian's home.

As he walked, a strange sense washed over him. He knew this sensation, yet it was impossible to describe to those who had not felt it, as if his soul were slightly electrified.

This feeling came whenever someone mentioned his True Name. It was strange to say the least. It made him feel more complete, more aware of…himself.

Thinking about his own nature, the runes of the spell appeared on their own in front of him, with nothing else to do, he decided to read over them whilst he walked;

Looking over his runes lifted his spirits, if only just a little. The amount of work he had put in after his ascension to get to where he was now was nothing short of exceptional. He had killed many creatures and had received far more memories than Damian could ever dream of.

He had traded most of them away for more soul shards or favours here and there and only kept two for himself.

The [Storm Chaser] was a memory Warden had created for him. It was a strange memory known as a garment which could be worn at the same time as Armour type memories, which made them very sought after.

It had no enchantments and was only an awakened memory of the first tier, but its function was simple, really. It was a simple pair of black goggles which protected his eyes when moving at frankly insane speeds.

He had something similar back in the waking world, but these were of much better quality.

The other memory, the [Plague's Blessing], was a small charm shaped like the head of a battle-axe, on a small chain he wore around his neck.

Its ability was simple yet highly effective. It made all his memories manifest more quickly and be more effective.

This one he had received from killing a strange creature of liquid glass and steel in the dungeons underneath the main keep, a strange Awakened Devil with the ability to erode metallic objects and add the crumbling remains to its mass.

If it weren't for Warden enhancing the Rank of the Devourers' sight, he would have never been able to kill that abomination.

Unlike Damian, Jasper wasn't too keen on the descriptions of his memories, but would read them out if the others were curious. He had even lent a few of his memories to Warden on occasion so that their brilliant leader could study their enchantments or improve them in some way.

Take his armour, for example, before it was simply an armour of the second tier, his reward for slaying that vile abomination of an Awakened Monster in his First nightmare, pretty decent all things considered.

However, after he got it back from Warden, he found out not only did Warden improve its class, but also learned of its singular enchantment, [Eye of the Storm].

The enchantment was activated when Jasper infused it with essence, which is why he didn't know about its power as a sleeper. Its enchantment makes it so that a wave of electricity explodes outwards, harming friends and foes alike all around.

The enchantment's power was determined by a person's affinity with storms and lightning, which made him the perfect person to have this memory.

Apart from that, nothing else about his runes had changed much from when he was a sleeper, all except for his newest Awakened ability, which read,

Aspect Ability: [Thunderous Wave]

Description:

[You can create thunderous blasts from your body]

The ability was simple yet effective. It enabled him to move quickly over a short distance, making it effective at short range.

Overall, the ability had become a major part of how he now fought, as he no longer had to disengage to build up enough speed to deliver a good amount of damage.

Satisfied with his runes, he dismissed them as he came to the door of his home. Reaching forward, he unlocked the door and made his way inside for a good night's rest.
