The gargantuan roots of the sacred tree formed natural walls around the camp, providing a safe haven from the dense, untamed jungle of Tenrou Island.
Ace stood leaning against one of the massive roots, his hands resting in his pockets.
He watched the tree line with sharp eyes, his endless stamina keeping him perfectly alert despite the stifling humidity.
Master Makarov sat on a nearby rock, his staff resting across his knees, looking pleased with the preliminary results.
Gajeel and Levy were the first ones there, having already cleared their route.
Gajeel was busy organizing a small pile of scrap iron he had hoarded, while Levy sat on the grass, sketching a map of the island based on what she had seen so far.
A loud rustling came from the western brush.
Gray and Loke stepped into the clearing.
Gray was already missing his shirt, panting slightly as he wiped sweat from his forehead.
Loke adjusted his tinted glasses, looking entirely unbothered in his sharp suit.
"Looks like we aren't the first ones here," Loke noted, offering a charming smile to Levy.
Gray crossed his arms, glaring at Gajeel. "You got here before me? What, did you get a free pass route or something?"
"Hardly," Gajeel smirked, tossing a piece of iron into his mouth and crunching loudly. "We had to fight Ace. He dropped a thirty-foot fire-breathing dinosaur on our heads."
Gray blinked, looking over at Ace, who simply offered a calm shrug. "Wait, you fought Ace and won? Man, I wish I got that route. All we had to do was chase Mest around an ice rink."
"Don't get cocky, stripper," Gajeel growled playfully. "You wouldn't have lasted five minutes against him."
Before Gray could fire back an insult, the southern bushes parted.
Cana and Lucy stumbled into the clearing. Lucy looked like she had been dragged through a swamp, her clothes soaked and her hair plastered to her face.
Cana, however, looked energized.
The fierce, desperate determination in her eyes hadn't faded, if anything, passing the first trial had only stoked the fire.
"We made it!" Lucy groaned, collapsing onto the soft grass next to Levy.
"I am never fighting in a flooded cave again. Bickslow's totems are terrifying when they pop out of the water."
"You fought Freed and Bickslow?" Gray asked, raising an eyebrow. "And you beat them?"
Cana walked over to a nearby stream to wash her face.
"Freed made a mistake and we capitalized on it."
Ace watched Cana carefully.
She was carrying a heavy burden, fighting for the right to finally tell Gildarts the truth about her parentage.
It made her dangerous, but also incredibly vulnerable.
A sudden, cheerful humming echoed through the clearing.
Mirajane floated down from the upper branches of the Tenrou Tree, her Satan Soul nowhere to be seen.
She held a small, pink notebook and a feathered pen, giggling to herself. "Oh, peonies would look lovely... but roses are so classic... maybe a rustic theme for the reception?"
A few seconds later, Elfman and Evergreen crept into the clearing from the opposite side, moving as quietly as possible.
Elfman looked absolutely terrified, using his hands to try and hide behind Evergreen's fan.
"Keep your voice down," Evergreen hissed, smacking his arm. "If she sees us, she's going to ask for a ring!"
"I panicked! It's not my fault!" Elfman aggressively whispered back. "A real man doesn't lie about marriage!"
Gray stared at the duo, thoroughly confused. "Uh... what is wrong with them?"
"They used a dirty trick to pass Mirajane," Gajeel laughed roughly. "They told her they were getting hitched. Knocked her out while she was distracted picking out table settings."
Lucy burst out laughing, while Gray just shook his head in disbelief.
The brush parted again, and Erza stepped into the camp.
She wore her standard Heart Kreuz armor, looking pristine and completely untouched by battle.
She walked over to Makarov, and give him a respectful nod.
"Juvia and Lisanna fought bravely, Master," Erza reported, her voice carrying across the quiet camp.
"But their coordination was lacking, so they failed the trial. They are waiting safely at the recovery camp on the beach."
Gray frowned slightly, a brief flash of sympathy crossing his face for Juvia, but he quickly masked it.
"That makes four teams," Makarov noted, looking around the clearing.
Gray and Loke, Cana and Lucy, Elfman and Evergreen, Levy and Gajeel.
"Wait," Levy said, looking toward the dark tree line. "Where's Natsu? Did he take the other candidate route?"
"No," Ace said quietly. "Natsu pulled Route A. He fought Gildarts."
A heavy silence fell over the candidates.
Fighting Gildarts was the ultimate bad draw.
Heavy, slow footsteps echoed from the main path. Gildarts walked into the clearing, his massive cloak billowing behind him.
He looked perfectly fine, not a single scratch on him.
He walked over to the Master, leaning against the Tenrou Tree with a heavy sigh.
"Well?" Gray asked, taking a step forward. "Did the idiot actually try to fight you? Did he fail?"
Before Gildarts could answer, two figures stepped out of the shadows behind him.
Natsu and Happy walked into the sunlight.
The entire camp froze.
Natsu wasn't yelling this time.
He walked with a quiet, grounded intensity that was entirely foreign to the loudmouthed Dragon Slayer.
He looked exhausted, humbled, but there was a new, sharp focus in his eyes.
Gray stared at him, genuinely unnerved. "Who are you and what have you done to the ash-brain? Why aren't you screaming about how you almost won?"
Natsu stopped, looking up at Gray. "I didn't almost win. I lost, couldn't even scratch him."
Lucy gasped softly, covering her mouth.
Natsu Dragneel, the guy who never backed down from a fight, was openly admitting defeat!
"But I'm still here," Natsu continued, his voice calm but incredibly firm.
Ace offered a slow, approving nod.
'He grew up,' Ace thought.
Makarov stood up from his stump, tapping his wooden staff against the ground.
The sharp clack echoed through the amphitheater, instantly drawing everyone's attention.
"Five teams," Makarov announced, his voice carrying the full, booming authority of the Fairy Tail Master.
"Natsu, Gray, Cana, Elfman, Levy. You have all passed the preliminary trials. You have proven your strength, your wits, and your courage. Be proud of yourselves."
The candidates stood taller, the exhaustion momentarily forgotten.
"But the S-Class rank is not handed out just for winning a fight," Makarov continued, his eyes narrowing.
"It is about protecting the legacy of this guild. And so, the second trial begins now."
Makarov pointed his staff toward the deepest, darkest part of the jungle, where the massive roots of the Tenrou Tree twisted into an impenetrable labyrinth.
"Your next task is a test of navigation and spirit," Makarov declared. "Somewhere on this island is the sacred resting place of our First Master, Mavis Vermillion. Her grave is hidden deep within the island's core."
Cana tightened her grip on her deck of cards, her eyes locking onto the dark jungle path.
"You have six hours," Makarov stated. "The first team to find the grave of Mavis Vermillion will be granted the right to take the final test. The others will fail. You must navigate the terrain, deal with the magical beasts, and outsmart your fellow guildmates."
"Find a grave?" Natsu repeated the words as a spark of his usual energy finally returning to his eyes.
He grinned, bumping fists with Happy.
"We can do that! We'll sniff it out!"
"Don't count on it, fire-breath," Gray smirked. "Loke and I are taking this one."
"It's not going to be that simple," Ace spoke up, pushing himself off the tree root and stepping into the center of the clearing.
The candidates all turned to look at him.
Ace's expression was calm, but there was a serious edge to his voice that commanded immediate attention.
"Tenrou Island isn't just a holy ground, it's a wild, dangerous ecosystem," Ace warned, his eyes scanning the faces of his guildmates.
"The magic density here mutates the wildlife. There are beasts out there that can swallow a wizard whole," Ace continued. "And worse, the dense ethernano can mess with your senses. Don't let your guard down for a single second. The wildlife isn't the only thing with fangs on this island. Keep your heads on a swivel, watch your partner's back, and if you sense something that feels wrong... don't ignore it."
Gajeel narrowed his eyes, picking up on the subtle warning in Ace's tone.
"You know something we don't, Ace?"
"I know that complacency kills," Ace replied smoothly. "You're competing against each other, but you're still Fairy Tail. If you run into real trouble out there, you send up a red flare. Understood?"
"Understood," Erza agreed firmly, stepping up beside Makarov. "The examiners will be patrolling the island. We will not interfere with the trial, but we will intervene if your lives are in genuine peril."
Makarov nodded, raising his staff high into the air.
"The second trial of the S-Class Promotion Exam..." Makarov shouted, bringing his staff down to strike the earth
"...BEGINS NOW!"
Chaos erupted instantly.
"Let's go, Happy!" Natsu roared, taking off in a dead sprint into the eastern brush.
"Get back here, you cheater!" Gray yelled, charging after him with Loke close behind.
Elfman grabbed Evergreen's hand.
"A real man finds the grave first!" He dragged her into the thick vines to the west.
Levy quickly rolled up her map. "Gajeel, this way! I tracked the leylines, I think I know where the magical center of the island is!"
Cana didn't say a word.
She just bolted toward the deepest part of the forest, moving with a desperate speed that forced Lucy to sprint just to keep up.
Within seconds, the clearing was empty of the candidates. The dense jungle swallowed them whole, leaving the camp quiet once again.
Makarov sat back down heavily on his stump, letting out a long, tired sigh. "They are a lively bunch. I just hope they don't destroy the island before they find the grave."
"They'll be fine, Master," Mirajane smiled, finally putting her wedding notebook away.
Ace walked toward the edge of the clearing, looking up through the canopy at the bright blue sky.
"I'm going to take a walk," Ace said, pulling his hands from his pockets. "Stretch my legs. I'll take the southern patrol route."
Gildarts watched him go, a knowing look in his eye. "Don't scare them too bad if you run into them out there, Ace."
"I'm not the one they need to be scared of," Ace murmured to himself, slipping into the shadows of the Tenrou jungle.
