Chapter 185 - Chapter 185

The three glowing black runes—Roar, Strike, and Strength—tore through the jungle air, expanding into massive, jagged waves of dark energy.

The sheer force of Yomazu's 'Triple Cascade' uprooted the trees in its path, hurtling directly toward Gajeel and Levy.

"Don't just stand there!" Gajeel yelled, planting his feet and crossing his iron-scaled arms to brace for the impact.

Levy didn't freeze.

She stepped out from behind the Iron Dragon Slayer, her magical pen moving in a frantic blur of neon light.

She recognized the properties of the dark script, it was a perversion of the same magic she spent her life mastering.

"Solid Script: Silence!"

The glowing word shot forward, wrapping around the Roar rune.

The sonic-based dark magic was instantly muted, dissipating into harmless black smoke before it could hit them.

"Solid Script: Storm!"

A violent gust of wind erupted from her second spell, colliding directly with the Strike rune.

The conflicting forces canceled each other out in a loud, concussive blast that sent dirt flying into the air.

"I got the last one!" Gajeel roared.

He didn't try to block the Strength rune. Instead, he lunged forward, transforming his right arm into a massive, jagged iron club.

He swung it with everything he had, slamming the heavy iron directly into the dark magic.

The collision sparked violently. The dark ethernano gnawed at his iron scales, but Gajeel's sheer kinetic force pushed through, shattering the final rune into pieces.

Yomazu's eyes narrowed beneath his samurai helmet. "Impressive counter. You understand the fundamental laws of written magic, little girl. But a battle is not won with defense alone."

"Egg Buster! Rain of yolks!" Kawazu cackled from the high branches.

The rooster fired a relentless volley of explosive eggs.

Gajeel grabbed Levy by the waist, leaping backward as the ground where they just stood erupted into a chain of fiery explosions.

Gajeel landed on a thick tree branch, dropping Levy safely on her feet.

He glared down at the smoke-filled clearing, blood trickling from the gash on his chest.

"This isn't a normal dark guild," Gajeel growled, wiping the blood from his skin. "Their magic is heavy. It feels like getting hit with a ton of bricks."

"They're the vanguard," Levy said, gripping her pen tight, her chest heaving. "If these two are just foot soldiers, I don't want to know what the rest of Grimoire Heart looks like."

"Doesn't matter," Gajeel smirked, a feral fire burning in his red eyes. "We're taking these two out right here. Keep that rooster off my back, shorty. The dog is mine."

Gajeel didn't wait for her to answer.

He launched himself off the branch, plummeting straight toward Yomazu with both arms transformed into massive iron polearms.

...

Back at the base camp, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Master Makarov stared up at the sky, watching the brilliant red flare slowly burn out against the encroaching gray storm clouds.

The massive, demonic airship of Grimoire Heart hovered over the island, casting a long, terrifying shadow over the sacred Tenrou Tree.

Erza, Mirajane, and Gildarts stood around him.

"They dare invade our holy ground," Makarov seethes, his old voice trembling with raw, unrestrained fury.

"Master," Erza said, drawing her sword. Her face was pale, but her eyes were sharp. "Give the order."

"The S-Class exam is officially suspended," Makarov commanded, turning to his strongest children.

"This island is vast, and our members are scattered. Find the candidates and help them. If you encounter any members of Grimoire Heart..."

Makarov's magical aura flared, a blinding, terrifying golden light that made the air itself vibrate.

"...you have my permission to use lethal force. Show them no mercy."

"Understood," Gildarts grunted, his heavy cloak billowing around him.

He didn't waste another second.

He turned and sprinted into the eastern woods, moving with terrifying speed for a man of his size.

Mirajane didn't even smile. Her body was engulfed in dark, purple energy as she transformed straight into her Satan Soul.

With a powerful beat of her leathery wings, she took off into the sky, scanning the northern terrain.

Erza dashed toward the western brush, her armor clanking against the heavy vines.

Makarov was left alone in the clearing.

He looked back up at the hovering airship. He tossed his wooden staff aside, taking a deep breath.

"You want a war?" Makarov growled. "I'll give you a war."

The old Master focused his magic, channeling the his spell.

His body began to glow with blinding light. The bones in his arms and legs cracked and expanded.

In a matter of seconds, Makarov grew, towering over the jungle canopy until he was a colossal giant, standing eye-to-eye with the airship.

....

Deep in the northern caverns, Gray wiped sweat from his brow, looking up at the red light filtering through the cracks in the ceiling.

"A red flare," Gray muttered, his expression turning serious.

He looked over at Loke, who was already adjusting his suit and dropping his relaxed demeanor.

"That's the emergency signal, The Master just canceled the exam."

"Something feels very wrong," Loke said, his senses attuned to the island's ethernano. "The magic in the air just turned toxic. It's feels... hostile."

A loud groan broke their focus.

Mest slowly pushed himself off the frozen cavern floor, clutching his head where Loke's Regulus Impact had struck him.

He blinked, shaking the dizziness away, before his eyes darted frantically around the room.

He felt the heavy magic descending on the island.

"No..." Mest gasped, his face draining of all color.

His heart hammered in his chest. "That magical signature... it's them. The Balam Alliance's strongest guild."

"You know what's going on?" Gray asked, stepping toward him.

"It's Grimoire Heart!" Mest yelled, scrambling to his feet.

He completely dropped his fake 'Mystogan's disciple' persona, raw panic taking over. "They found the island! We have to get out of here right now! We have to run!"

"We aren't running anywhere," Gray said firmly, crossing his arms.

He didn't care who this guy really was right now.

"Fairy Tail doesn't run from a fight. Especially not on our own island."

"You don't understand!" Mest argued, grabbing Wendy, who was just starting to wake up, by the arm.

"This isn't a normal dark guild! If we stay here, we're all going to die!"

"I'm not scared of them," Gray replied, slamming his fist into his open palm, generating a cold mist.

"You should be."

A new, deep voice echoed from the entrance of the cavern.

Gray, Loke, and Mest froze.

They slowly turned toward the dark tunnel.

A tall muscled man walked out of the shadows. He had tanned skin, dark hair pulled back into a severe topknot, and strange, tribal tattoos marking his arms and face.

He wore minimal armor, carrying an aura of crushing discipline.

Mest staggered backward, his legs shaking. "Azuma..."

"You recognize me. Good," Azuma said calmly, stepping fully into the cavern.

He didn't draw a weapon. He simply looked around the frozen cave, analyzing the ice Gray had created.

"This island has magnificent leylines. The roots of the Tenrou Tree run deep. It's a tragedy we have to burn it all to the ground."

"You aren't burning anything," Gray growled. He dropped into a stance. "Ice-Make: Lance!"

Gray fired a rapid barrage of sharp, heavy ice spears directly at the intruder.

Azuma simply raised his hand.

The solid stone floor beneath Azuma's feet violently erupted. Massive, thick tree roots tore through the rock, twisting and weaving together to form a dense wooden shield in the blink of an eye.

Gray's ice lances shattered harmlessly against the magical wood.

"Wood magic?" Loke noted, his fists glowing with Regulus light.

"Not just wood," Azuma corrected, lowering his hand. The wooden shield retreated back into the earth.

"I'm Azuma of the Seven Kin of Purgatory. I wield the Great Tree Arc. I control the magic hidden within the earth itself."

Azuma locked his dark, intense eyes onto Gray. "The airship is deploying our forces, but I came looking for a real battle. Don't disappoint me."

....

Back on the southern cliffs, Agunimon stood amidst the groaning bodies of the vanguard troops.

He watched the massive shadow of Giant Makarov rise above the tree line in the distance, engaging the Grimoire Heart airship.

The sheer scale of the Master's magic was awe-inspiring, but Ace knew it wouldn't be enough to stop Hades.

Agunimon reverted to Ace in a flash of digital code, his coat snapping in the wind.

He slipped the D-Tector back into his pocket.

The vanguard was handled. No more grunts would be flanking the guild from the southern shore.

"Now for the real problem," Ace muttered.

He closed his eyes, tapping into the faint, static hum of his magic, reaching out across the island to track the massive energy spikes.

He felt Gajeel and Levy fighting hard in the east.

He felt Gray and Loke clashing with Azuma in the north.

He felt Natsu's faint, unconscious signature near the center, right where a massive, localized pocket of dead ethernano lingered.

And then, he felt something dropping from the sky, plummeting rapidly toward a clearing just a mile away from his current position.

The signature was hot, erratic, and deeply unhinged.

"Zancrow," Ace deduced, recognizing the chaotic signature of the Flame God Slayer.

'If Zancrow ran into any of the weaker candidates, he'd incinerate them without a second thought.'

Ace opened his eyes, a cold, focused intent settling over his face.

He turned his back to the ocean, walking straight into the dense brush of the Tenrou jungle.

"Let's see whose fire burns hotter."
