Chapter 46 - The King Who Walked Away

Dustfall had never been quiet.

Even at night there were arguments, music, gunshots, life.

But tonight…

Silence.

Maxruell stood at the top of the tower looking out at the broken city.

Three districts burned.

The Glass Fleet had pulled back for now.

People whispered his name in the streets below.

Red King.

He hated it.

A lieutenant climbed the stairs behind him.

"Red King, we secured the east market again."

Maxruell didn't turn.

"How many died?"

The lieutenant hesitated.

"…thirty-two."

Maxruell closed his eyes.

Thirty-two more people under his protection.

Thirty-two failures.

Miles away in the canyon, the wind carried the smell of smoke.

Juvy sat beside a fire.

Around her, the Flame Resistance treated the wounded from the rail attack.

Dozens of freed prisoners.

But many fighters were hurt.

Mara approached.

"We did it. The rail is gone."

Juvy nodded slowly.

"But we almost lost Eli."

Her hands were still glowing faintly.

Too bright.

Too unstable.

She whispered to herself,

"I'm losing control…"

Back in Dustfall…

The red stone in Maxruell's chest pulsed again.

Harder.

More urgent.

She's in danger.

He clenched his fists.

"Shut up."

You felt it.

He had.

That explosion.

That surge of power.

Juvy.

Something inside him snapped.

He turned to the lieutenant.

"You're in charge of the city now."

The man blinked.

"…What?"

Maxruell walked past him.

"Keep people safe. No gangs. No raids."

"Where are you going?!"

Maxruell didn't stop walking.

"To stop something worse than war."

In the desert camp…

Juvy woke suddenly.

Her chest hurt.

Her soul vault burned.

She stood and walked outside the camp.

The night sky stretched endlessly.

And for a moment…

She felt something familiar.

Like a shadow watching from far away.

"Max…" she whispered.

Across the desert highway…

Maxruell walked alone.

No guards.

No army.

Just him.

The Red King had left his throne.

Behind him, Dustfall slowly disappeared into the darkness.

Ahead of him…

The world.

The stone whispered again:

If you find her…

Maxruell finished the sentence quietly.

"…I won't fight her."

The stone didn't like that answer.

High above the planet…

Mother Cain watched the movement on her map.

Two dots.

One leaving a city.

One leading a rebellion.

The distance between them shrinking.

Serah looked at the display.

"He's moving toward her."

Cain nodded.

"Good."

Serah frowned slightly.

"You wanted them separated."

Cain smiled.

"I wanted them ready."

She tapped a new command.

Across the world, satellite weapons activated.

Operation: Twin Capture.

"Bring them to me," Cain said calmly.

"Alive… if possible."

Back in the desert…

Juvy sat by the fire again.

Eli slept beside her.

The Resistance rested.

But she couldn't.

Something was coming.

She felt it deep in her bones.

The prophecy whispering again.

Two Significants.

One destiny.

One survivor.

Juvy looked toward the dark horizon.

"Maxruell…"

Far away in the night…

Maxruell stopped walking.

He looked at the same horizon.

"…Juvy."

And somewhere between them…

The first hunter ships descended from the sky.
