Chapter 48 - Crimson Catastrophe

The desert trembled.

Maxruell stood in the center of the battlefield, darkness swirling around him like a living storm.

The hunters raised their rifles.

"OPEN FIRE!"

Blue beams tore through the night.

Maxruell didn't move.

The shadows rose.

The beams vanished inside them.

Like they were swallowed by an endless abyss.

One of the hunters whispered through his helmet:

"…That's impossible."

Maxruell took one step forward.

The sand cracked under his boots.

"You came all this way," he said quietly.

His crimson eyes locked onto the commander.

"Just to die?"

Inside the energy cage, Juvy struggled against the restraints.

"Max! Stop!"

But he couldn't hear her.

Or maybe he refused to listen.

The shadows exploded outward.

Maxruell vanished.

Then, He appeared behind the first hunter.

A crimson slash.

The soldier's armor split in half.

The body collapsed instantly.

The battlefield froze.

One of the Resistance fighters whispered:

"Holy… hell."

The hunters adjusted quickly.

"ENGAGE CLOSE COMBAT!"

Six of them rushed Maxruell.

Their armor boosted their strength.

Energy blades ignited.

Maxruell didn't dodge.

He caught the first blade with his bare hand.

Darkness wrapped around the weapon and crushed it.

The hunter tried to pull back Too late.

Maxruell grabbed his helmet and slammed him into the ground.

The earth shattered.

Another hunter lunged from behind.

Maxruell twisted.

A wave of darkness erupted from his arm.

The soldier was thrown thirty meters across the sand.

Two more attacked simultaneously.

Maxruell's shadows split into claws.

They ripped through the hunters' armor like paper.

Blood sprayed across the sand.

The Resistance fighters stared in horror.

Even Mara muttered:

"Damnit… he's a monster."

The commander remained calm.

He raised his arm.

"Phase Two."

From the hunter ships above, new pods dropped.

Heavy units.

Massive armored soldiers carrying Significant-killer cannons.

Maxruell finally smiled.

"Good."

The cannons fired.

Blue beams collided with the shadows.

For the first time Maxruell staggered.

The energy burned through part of the darkness.

He gritted his teeth.

"So… you can hurt me."

The stone in his chest pulsed violently.

Whispers filled his mind.

Kill them.

Destroy them.

Take everything.

Maxruell raised both hands.

The entire battlefield darkened.

Even the moon disappeared behind the shadows.

The hunters froze.

"Energy levels spiking!"

Maxruell spoke softly.

"You wanted a king."

The darkness condensed behind him.

A massive crimson silhouette formed.

A giant made of shadow and blood.

"Then kneel."

The shadow titan slammed its arm down.

Half the hunter formation vanished under the impact.

Explosions lit the canyon.

Inside the cage, Juvy's eyes widened.

"Max…"

This wasn't the brother she remembered.

This was something else.

Something dangerous.

Something that might destroy everything.

Her restraints sparked as her power surged.

Light leaked through the cage.

The chains began to crack.

The commander looked up at the towering shadow behind Maxruell.

"…Interesting."

He activated a hidden transmitter.

"Primary objective updated."

The hunters received the new order instantly.

CAPTURE THE RED KING.

Maxruell stepped forward again.

Hunters charged him desperately.

But they couldn't stop him.

Every step crushed another soldier.

Every swing of shadow tore through armor and bone.

The battlefield became a graveyard.

Above it all, Mother Cain watched calmly.

Serah looked disturbed.

"This isn't a battle."

"No," Cain agreed.

"It's a transformation."

She zoomed the feed on Maxruell's glowing eyes.

"The Red King is being born."

Serah glanced at Juvy breaking her cage.

"And the Bright Sister?"

Cain smiled faintly.

"She's about to prove whether light can stop darkness."

The energy cage shattered.

Light burst outward.

Juvy dropped to the sand.

Free.

She stood slowly.

Her power blazing brighter than ever.

Maxruell noticed immediately.

His crimson eyes met her glowing ones.

For a moment…

The battlefield stopped.

Brother and sister stood across the burning desert.

Two Significants.

Two halves of the same destiny.

Juvy spoke first.

"Max… stop this."

Maxruell's shadows tightened around him.

"You should've stayed out of this."

Lightning crackled around Juvy's hands.

"I'm not your enemy."

Maxruell looked at the dead hunters around them.

His voice cold.

"Then prove it."

The wind roared between them.

The prophecy loomed closer.
