Chapter 56 - Leviathan

The horizon split open.

What they thought was a fortress… moved.

Massive engines roared as the structure rose higher into the sky, unfolding like a mechanical god.

Layers of armor shifted.

Cannons rotated into position.

Energy shields flared to life, glowing deep blue.

The desert trembled beneath its weight.

Juvy stared up at it.

"…That's not a fortress."

Maxruell's eyes narrowed.

"…It's a weapon."

A voice echoed from the sky.

Cold. Familiar.

"Maxruell. Juvy."

Mother Cain.

"You've exceeded expectations."

Juvy clenched her fists.

"Come down here and fight us yourself!"

Cain ignored her.

"The Leviathan Unit was built for one purpose."

The massive structure shifted again.

Panels opened across its surface.

Revealing hundreds of glowing cores.

"To end the Significants."

Maxruell stepped forward.

Shadows rising.

"Then it's gonna fail."

Juvy moved beside him.

Light blazing again.

"Like everything else you've sent."

The Leviathan responded instantly.

A beam fired.

Not like the others.

Faster.

Heavier.

Maxruell reacted—

Shadows surged to block it—

But the beam pierced through.

It slammed into him.

The ground exploded.

Juvy's eyes widened.

"MAX!"

Smoke filled the air.

Maxruell emerged—

Sliding back across the sand.

Burn marks across his arm.

His shadows flickered.

"…That one hurt."

The Leviathan adjusted.

Scanning.

Analyzing.

Adapting.

Its voice echoed:

"DARKNESS OUTPUT COUNTERMEASURE ACTIVE."

Maxruell's expression darkened.

"…It's learning."

Juvy didn't wait.

She launched forward.

Light bursting around her like a comet.

Crystal formed into a massive spear in her hand.

"Then we hit it before it adapts more!"

She leapt—

And hurled the spear at the core.

It struck—

But the shield absorbed it.

Barely even cracked.

The Leviathan fired again.

Multiple beams this time.

Juvy raised crystal walls—

They shattered instantly.

One beam clipped her side.

She crashed into the sand.

Pain shot through her body.

Maxruell moved.

Faster.

Angrier.

Darkness exploded outward.

A massive shadow wave slammed into the Leviathan's shield.

For a moment—

It flickered.

Maxruell pushed harder.

"BREAK!!"

The shield cracked slightly.

But then—

It stabilized.

The Leviathan's voice echoed again:

"ADAPTATION COMPLETE."

The next second—

A pulse wave blasted outward.

It hit Maxruell directly.

His shadows shattered.

He was thrown across the battlefield.

Juvy coughed, struggling to stand.

"…It's countering both of us…"

Maxruell stood up slowly.

Breathing heavier now.

"…Yeah."

For the first time—

They weren't overwhelming their enemy.

They were being outmatched.

Above them…

Leviathan's main cannon began charging.

Far larger than the others.

The air itself warped around it.

Juvy felt it instantly.

"…That'll kill us."

Maxruell didn't respond.

He just stared at the weapon.

Thinking.

Calculating.

For once—

Not rushing in.

"Juvy."

She looked at him.

"…What?"

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"We can't beat this thing head-on."

She clenched her fists.

"So what, we just run?!"

Maxruell shook his head slightly.

"No."

His shadows gathered again.

But this time—

Different.

More controlled.

"We break it from the inside."

Juvy blinked.

"…You're serious?"

He looked up at the Leviathan.

"If we hit that core directly… we win."

She followed his gaze.

The glowing center of the fortress.

Heavily shielded.

Heavily defended.

Almost impossible to reach.

"…That's suicide."

Maxruell smirked faintly.

"Since when did that stop us?"

The Leviathan fired.

The massive cannon released.

A beam descended from the sky like judgment.

Maxruell grabbed Juvy Shadows wrapped around them both, And they vanished.

The beam struck.

The desert exploded.

A crater forming instantly.

Inside the shadows…

For a brief moment—

Silence.

Juvy looked at him.

"…You're insane."

Maxruell shrugged.

"…Probably."

Then—

They emerged.

Right above the Leviathan.

Mid-air.

Close to the core.

Alarms blared across the fortress.

"INTRUSION DETECTED."

Turrets turned instantly.

Weapons locking on.

Juvy's eyes widened.

"…This is a bad idea."

Maxruell grinned slightly.

"Too late now."

They dropped.

Straight toward the core.

Light and darkness building together again.

For one final strike.

High above…

Mother Cain watched carefully.

No smile this time.

Only focus.

"…Let's see."

The distance closed.

The core glowed brighter.

The weapons fired.

Everything converged in one moment.

And for the first time since the war began…

Victory was uncertain.
