Chapter 21: The Younger Sister
"Hey, Daniel's Auntie, don't you want to share your thoughts on being rescued by a hero? I bet all your suitors will be scared away after today. If you ever need someone to serve you tea and meals, you might want to consider me. Absolutely free and absolutely effective!"
Little Fatty teased Jessica, who was standing next to him. He immediately received a beating on the head: "Little Fatty, you dare to eat tofu? Have you had enough of living? It's good that those flies aren't bothering my mother, so I can have some peace and quiet."
"Heroine, spare me! I was wrong!"
Little Fatty pretended to be in pain and ran to the side.
Daniel got out of the bike without hesitation and kicked him in the butt: "Someone like you wants to ride on my head and act like an elder? You're asking for a beating. It wouldn't be too much to beat you until you can't live a normal life."
The three of them started joking around, oblivious to everyone else, their clear laughter filled with youthful joy.
At this moment, the crowd grew larger and larger. Daniel, with his sharp eyes, spotted Danisha and Soya chatting and laughing as they pushed their bicycles over. He immediately waved to them and said, "Little sister, over here!"
Just then, a little girl tugged at Soya's sleeve. The two seemed to know each other well and went to the side to whisper to each other. Danisha then came over and asked with concern, "Brother, are you alright?"
"What could possibly happen to me? You have way too little faith in me!"
Daniel gave him a look that said, "I'm a bad guy."
Danisha smiled and showed off her bicycle, saying, "Brother, how about this? Dad bought it for me yesterday, and he also bought one for Soya. I won't have to walk so much in the morning anymore! Soya said she can sleep in now."
Daniel lit another cigarette: "What's the big deal? When I make more money in a while, I'll buy you a small motorcycle, something slow, light, and cute. Then it'll be much easier for my little sister to get to and from school, and she'll have a means of transportation to go to the mountains."
Danisha smiled without saying anything, but Jessica, somewhat jealous, patted Daniel on the head from behind: "What? Soya and the others all have bicycles, so you're not planning to give your aunt one too? Let me tell you, if you really buy one later, you have to buy one for me too!"
"Fine, you can beat me up like a bandit all you want. Now I can't even save up enough for a wife. If I don't have enough money to get a wife in the future, I'll just kidnap you and make you my wives. You can decide who gets to be the elder and who gets to be the younger."
Daniel put on an act of world-weariness, and ended up getting hit on the head a few more times. This time, even Danisha blushed as she struck him.
"Hey, aren't you going to school today?"
Just then, the bell rang, and Little Fatty hesitated before asking.
"He's practically filthy rich, yet he's still in school."
As Jessica spoke, she pulled Danisha along and the two of them left.
Daniel watched his aunt's swaying bottom as she walked and thought fiercely: "Little wench, I'll teach you a lesson the day you get into my bed." After they had walked a distance, he said to Little Fatty, "I'm thinking of talking to the principal about getting a long leave of absence in a while, to see if there are any other ways to make money. During this time, please keep an eye on my aunt and Danisha. If they get bullied, give me a call!"
Little Fatty nodded seriously, as if he had received a mission from a high-ranking leader: "I've got this covered, don't worry. Besides, with Brother Dan's imposing manner at the school gate yesterday, who would dare to even think about it? That would be pure suicide."
Suddenly, as if remembering something, she said, "Oh right, Rose has been acting strange these past two days. She keeps spacing out in class and has gotten scolded a few times."
Daniel immediately grinned; this was exactly the effect he wanted. His words that day had probably kept this usually introverted girl awake at night. They'd been deskmates for two years, and she was probably used to his presence. Now, suddenly leaving for a while might make Rose feel like something was missing. With that reaction, it was only a matter of time before he took her into his room: "Maybe she's not feeling well. Give her my phone number. Just tell her to call me if anything happens!"
"Umm…Brother Dan!. Can I ask you something?"
Little Fatty suddenly became a little awkward.
"What's up? Just tell me straight, given our relationship."
"Lend me hundred Dollor!"
The chubby boy looked a little embarrassed.
Daniel chuckled. He'd been through middle age himself. These days, anyone with over fifty dollor was considered super rich. Asking for such a sum out of the blue meant he'd hooked up with some respectable woman. Looks like Little Fatty's puberty was starting to stir. He grinned and pulled out five hundred, handing it over and asking, "You little rascal, tell me honestly, whose daughter are you planning to ruin?"
"She's from Class 3 of Grade 8, and her name is Lucy. She's Danisha's classmate."
When Little Fatty realized his secret had been exposed, he took the money, blushed, and ran away.
Daniel cursed, "You bastard, you're trying to imitate those old cows eating young grass! If you're going to imitate, then do it properly! What kind of fat cow eating young grass is this? Be careful, their parents might come knocking on your door!"
Despite his cursing, he secretly thought that young grass must taste good, otherwise so many old cows wouldn't like it. With a smug smile, he shifted gears and prepared to go home.
"Dan, you're back!"
When Daniel entered, George was feeding chickens in the yard. It's normal for children in the countryside to stay at relatives' houses at night, so they didn't find it strange that their son hadn't come home all night.
"Okay, Dad, come here, I need to talk to you about something!"
As Daniel spoke, he sat down on the steps in front of the house and took out a cigarette. George put down what he was holding, took the cigarette from his son, lit it, and felt even happier when he saw it was a WhiteDragon brand. His son was smoking WhiteDragon at such a young age; he was sure to have a bright future.
"Dad, I'd like to take a leave of absence from school this semester for the time being!"
George immediately jumped up: "What? You're not going to study this semester! What are you going to do then?"
Daniel, with a calm demeanor, gestured for his father to sit down before slowly saying, "Whether I study this semester or not doesn't matter to me anymore. Anyway, I've already finished everything I need to learn in the second year of high school. Even if I don't go to school, I won't fall behind in any studies. Besides, right now, everything I see makes me think about whether I can make money in there. I feel out of place in the school environment. I want to take this time to hone my skills and earn more money. Then we can live a peaceful and comfortable life."
"But you'll be a senior in high school next semester! What if you don't get into a good school?"
George still harbors the idea of aborting his son.
Daniel thought for a moment and slowly said, "Let's talk about it in our senior year of high school. Besides, going to university isn't necessarily a good thing. Haven't you seen how many college graduates haven't found good jobs? And in our rural area, isn't the purpose of studying to earn more money? I think gaining more practical experience might be better than going to university. More importantly, Danisha is still studying. If we both go to university, given our family's circumstances, one of us will definitely have to drop out. That's why I had this idea. I want to see if I can still earn this much money."
George thought about it and agreed. Isn't the purpose of rural children's education to earn more money in the future? Besides, if both children went to university, it would be an astronomical expense for a family like theirs. Thinking about his son's performance recently, he felt a sense of relief. After all, as long as someone can earn money and live a good life, that's enough. However, he still hoped that his son could continue his studies: "Have you thought about what you want to do if you drop out of school?"
"I want to use this time to travel to big cities and the coastal areas to see if there are any places where I can make money."
Daniel had already figured out how to make a fortune, but it was his own secret and he couldn't tell anyone.
George thought for a long time before sighing: "Alright, now that you're all grown up, I can't control you anymore, but you have to promise me you won't do anything bad."
Daniel breathed a sigh of relief upon realizing he had convinced his father: "Don't worry, I promise I will never do anything illegal."
"I have to go help out in the fields! There's some meat and rice on the table. You can take it to your aunt later!"
George stood up and walked outside, shaking his head helplessly as he thought of his younger sister. She was the most educated of the three siblings, yet she wouldn't find a stable way to make a living. She insisted on becoming a teacher at some lousy elementary school, a job that barely paid anything, and now she's over thirty and still unmarried. Since their parents passed away, he, as the eldest brother, has worried endlessly about his stubborn sister.
[Father's Sister - George's sister - Aunt]
Daniel thought for a moment. His aunt seemed to be thirty-one already! She still hadn't settled her marriage prospects. The village where she taught was unimaginably poor. The so-called primary school was just a dilapidated hut made of wood and straw, and the students were all children from impoverished families. They were dressed like little beggars. The school was merely a makeshift shelter in the village. Even though Kaseri Village was notoriously poor for miles around, they gritted their teeth and gave his aunt a little over a hundred dollor a month for living expenses. Keep in mind that a hundred dollor was the living expenses of two families in that area, showing how much respect they had for her.
Daniel had no memory of this aunt. Whether in his previous life or this life, she seemed to rarely come to the house. It was said that she had a falling out with his grandparents over teaching in the mountains and ran away in a fit of pique. However, he remembered that his aunt would come back every time his grandparents left, and each time she would cry her heart out.
