The office door clicked shut behind Lyra, leaving Killian alone with the woman who had raised him. Vivienne's fury radiated from her like heat from a forge, and suddenly the fog that had clouded his mind since the mage's attack lifted completely.
The journey to this office remained a hazy memory. He recalled fragments - solid ground beneath his feet, wind whipping past his face - but everything else blurred together. That damned spell caster and whatever enchantment had scrambled his thoughts.
But now, staring at his adoptive mother's rigid posture, Killian understood this was no time to dwell on magical interference. He cleared his throat, preparing to speak, when Vivienne's raised palm silenced him.
