Chapter 2

Hope

The second orgasm hit harder than the first.

It rolled through her in a long, shaking wave that left her breathless and open-mouthed against Stiles's shoulder. Her nails dug into his back. Her legs tightened around his hips. For several seconds there was nothing but the thick, rhythmic press of him inside her and the heat flooding every nerve she had.

Then the haze began to thin.

Reality returned in pieces. The weight of his body. The slick slide of their skin. The fact that the person buried inside her was the same person who had shared every birthday, every training session, every quiet night in this house. Her twin. The boy the universe had dropped into her life as a second heartbeat and then never taken away.

Hope's eyes opened fully. The soft gray light of morning looked different now. Colder.

She planted both hands on his chest and shoved.

Stiles's thrust stuttered. He caught himself on his forearms, still halfway inside her, expression startled and open. Hope shoved again, harder, until he had no choice but to pull out and roll to the side. The sudden emptiness made her flinch. She scrambled backward until her spine hit the headboard, yanking the sheet up over her bare body like it could undo what had already happened.

Her heart was slamming. Her thighs were still trembling. The evidence of everything they had done was wet between her legs and impossible to ignore.

"No," she said. The word came out rough. "Stop. Just—stop."

Stiles

The loss of her was physical.

One second he had been buried deep, lost in the tight heat of her and the way she had pulled him closer. The next she was gone, sheet clutched to her chest, eyes wide and sharp with something that looked a lot like panic. Stiles stayed where he was on the mattress, breathing hard, cock still slick and aching. He didn't reach for her. He already knew that would be a mistake.

"Hope—"

"Don't." She held up one hand, palm out. "Don't say my name like that. Not right now."

He closed his mouth. The silence that followed was thick enough to feel. Somewhere outside a car door slammed. Ordinary life continuing as if nothing inside this room had just permanently changed.

Stiles's throat felt tight. "I didn't mean to hurt you."

"You didn't hurt me." Hope's voice was steadier now, but the edge in it was unmistakable. "That's not the point. The point is this is wrong. All of it. You're my brother."

The word landed between them like a blade.

Hope

Saying it out loud made the reality sharper.

She could still feel him. The stretch. The heat. The way her body had answered without hesitation once the first wave of shock had passed. That was the worst part. Not that he had started it. That she had let it continue. That she had come on his tongue and then on his cock and, for a while, had not cared whose twin he was.

Shame crawled up her neck, hot and sticky.

"We've shared a bed since we were kids," she said, forcing the words out before they could stick in her throat. "We've been through everything together. You were the one person I never had to explain myself to. And now we just—what? Crossed the one line that was supposed to stay closed?"

Stiles sat up slowly. He didn't try to cover himself. The honesty of that almost made her look away. Almost.

"I know what we are," he said quietly. "I've known every single day since I opened my eyes in that cradle and saw your face. I spent years trying not to feel this. I told myself it would ruin everything. That if I ever touched you like that I'd lose the only family that ever felt real."

Hope's fingers tightened on the sheet. "Then why did you?"

"Because this morning I woke up and the wanting was louder than the fear." His voice stayed low, steady, no excuses. "I've been in love with you for as long as I've been in this body. Longer, maybe. I didn't plan this. I just… stopped fighting it."

The confession should have made her angrier. Instead it made the knot in her chest pull tighter.

Stiles

He watched her process the words. He had imagined this moment a thousand times—usually ending with her looking at him like he was something broken. The reality was quieter and somehow worse. She looked gutted. Not disgusted. Just… wrecked by the truth of it.

"I need you to hear me," Hope said. "This can't happen again. Not any of it. Not the kissing, not the touching, not whatever the hell that just was. We are twins. Blood. Family. There is no version of this that doesn't end badly."

Stiles nodded once. The motion felt heavy. "Okay."

"I'm serious."

"I know you are." He dragged a hand over his face, then let it drop. "I'm not going to pretend I don't still want you. That would be a lie, and we've never been good at lying to each other. But I hear you. I'll stop."

The promise sat between them, fragile and necessary.

Hope's shoulders loosened a fraction. She still kept the sheet high. Her eyes were red at the edges, though she hadn't cried. Stiles wanted to reach for her the way he always had—comfort, habit, the easy intimacy of a lifetime shared. He kept his hands to himself.

Hope

The room felt too small.

She could still smell him on her skin. Could still feel the faint throb between her legs where he had been. Her body hadn't gotten the message yet that everything was supposed to be over. That was going to be a problem.

"I need space," she said. "Actual space. Not just you staying on your side of the bed."

Stiles looked at the pushed-together mattresses, at the years of casual closeness that had made this morning possible in the first place. "I'll move my bed back to the other room."

"Good."

Silence stretched again. Hope stared at a point on the wall past his shoulder because looking directly at him still felt dangerous. Part of her—small, traitorous—already missed the weight of him. She crushed the thought before it could grow.

"We're going to act like this never happened," she said. "As much as that's possible. Training, missions, family dinners—all of it stays the same. No weird tension. No lingering looks. We bury this."

"And if I can't bury it completely?"

The question was quiet. Honest.

Hope finally met his eyes. "Then you keep it to yourself. Because I can't… I can't be the person who destroys what's left of us just because my body got confused for twenty minutes."

Stiles's jaw flexed. He nodded again. "Understood."

She waited until he stood and pulled his boxers back on. Waited until he gathered his clothes and walked to the door without looking back. Only when the latch clicked shut did she let the sheet fall and press the heels of her hands against her eyes.

The ache between her legs had not faded.

Neither had the hollow feeling in her chest where something important had just been cut away.

Hope sat there for a long time, listening to the ordinary sounds of the house waking up, and tried to remember how to be only his sister again.
