I moved instantly, stepping in front of the camera and folding my arms as my mind raced for an explanation that wouldn't expose me. Frustration coiled tight in my chest. Elliot had a way of dragging me into situations where my instincts and my pride clashed, leaving me scrambling to regain control.
A sharp beep cut through the air as the door unlocked. Elliot's hand settled on the doorknob with effortless authority, like every barrier existed to yield to him. He was about to step inside when he paused, glancing back at me where I stood with my back turned. One brow lifted slightly. "Aren't you coming in?"
"You go ahead. I need to make a phone call." I pulled out my phone, trying to keep my tone casual, but the tension in my body betrayed me. I needed a moment—just one—to steady myself, to avoid walking in beside him like we belonged together.
