Further questioning Scott turned out to be useless. The wolf was greedy but cowardly, and once Rey realized he truly knew nothing else, he lost interest in wasting more time on him. Before leaving, Rey tossed him two hundred dollars.

Early the next morning, I drifted awake to the sound of Jared laughing in the living room. Sleep still clung heavily to my body as I pushed the blanket aside and stepped out of the bedroom. The moment I entered the hall, my heartbeat stumbled.
Elliot was sitting on the couch beside Jared.
The two of them were focused on a Rubik's cube, their heads bent close together beneath the pale morning light. Jared's cheerful scent filled the apartment while Elliot's colder Alpha aura lingered quietly beneath it, familiar enough to make my wolf restless.
"Mommy!" Jared immediately looked up excitedly. "Mr. Presgrave bought breakfast for us. Come eat!"
