Clang, clang, clang! Two figures clashed in mid-air, shattering the sky's calm. After the final exchange they separated, Gazes locked.
Both combatants were little girls. One clasped a tome, six wings spread wide, fluffy white hair tied into twin tails with bunny-clip ribbons. A pink jacket topped a white camisole; a red pleated skirt and white thigh-highs framed slender legs. Deep-pink eyes glowed with resolve.
Another petite girl held a rapier, dressed in a white one-piece gown edged with gold, a white cape with golden trim draped over her shoulders. Her silvery-white hair, damp and lustrous, looked as though kissed by morning dew, and her large sapphire-blue eyes blinked continuously—utterly adorable.
"Hehehe! Fifty years have passed, yet Laffey, you're still so strong—but you're still just a step behind me." The girl in the white dress tilted her rapier in the air, a scornful look on her face.
The girl named Laffey said nothing; she merely placed her hand in the air, and a bottle of wine slowly materialized in her grasp, her thumb slipping beneath the cap.
Pop!
Glug-glug!
Burp!
"Ahh~ Laffey's so sleepy..."
After finishing the drink, Laffey felt drowsy. She tilted her head, eyelids drooping as though she might nod off at any moment.
"Dopey rabbit! Are you even listening to me? Don't you dare fall asleep!" Seeing her opponent ignore her and practically doze off, the girl in the white dress shouted in exasperation.
The roar jolted Laffey awake at once; though her eyes remained half-lidded, she was fully alert—only a tiny bit sleepy, really just a tiny bit.
"Vicious! Is it time to eat yet?" Laffey asked, slipping a finger into her mouth.
"It's not mealtime, and we're hardly on good terms, so stop acting like we're friends," Vicious snapped, cheeks flushed with anger. "You're a seraphim created by the creation goddess; I'm a vampire progenitor made by the Aircraft Carrier Demon God. When we meet, there's only one outcome: we fight to the death."
"Ahh~ So, do you know what Aircraft Carrier Demon God looks like?" Laffey asked, tilting her head.
"I've forgotten her face; I only recall her figure. Some force blocks my memory. Come to think of it, is it the same for you?" Vicious pressed a hand to her forehead, trying to recall the demon god's face, but the effort brought piercing pain.
"Right, I can't remember the creation goddess's face either. If you've forgotten what she looks like, why keep fighting me?" Laffey wondered aloud.
Vicious shook her head. "You don't understand. We demons were born to destroy the world. Even if the creation goddess and Aircraft Carrier Demon God vanished mysteriously, we'll keep fighting—it's our reason for existence. And as the creation goddess's closest Seraph guard, you're our greatest obstacle."
"Foolish! If you demons insist on destroying the world, I'll stop you and fight you to the end," Laffey declared coldly, eyes snapping open.
"Enough talk—fight, seraphim Laffey!" Vicious roared, a torrent of mana erupting around her as she shot forward like lightning, rapier leveled at Laffey.
"Stubborn vampire progenitor—this place shall be your grave!" Laffey's own terrifying aura exploded forth, holy golden light blazing around her and making her too radiant to look upon.
Facing the lightning-fast Vicious, Laffey stayed calm. She lifted her right hand and chanted a holy spell.
"O holy power, heed my call, become the tome of divine judgment and grant the sinner eternal death."
She flicked her wrist, hurling the codex straight at the onrushing Vicious.
The moment it left her hand, the book swelled to several yards in size, ripping through the air with such force that space itself seemed ready to shatter as it crashed toward Vicious.
Seeing the massive tome descending, Vicious frowned, skidded to a halt, and raised her rapier high. A crimson glow blossomed along the blade, brightening until it blazed like a miniature sun.
"Blood-Slaying Crescent!"
At her shout, the air around her solidified; a three-yard crimson crescent of energy burst from the sword.
The red arc shot skyward, trailing sonic booms, cleaving the air so cleanly that only the wind rushing back in revealed its deadly edge.
Under their Gaze, the colossal tome and the razor-sharp crescent collided with a thunderous roar. A shock-wave of destructive energy swept outward, obliterating every tree and creature in the forest below.
Unconcerned by the codex's destruction, Laffey simply lifted her hand and the shattered tome re-formed in her grasp.
Unharmed, Vicious sneered. Laffey, slightly surprised by her foe's resilience, resumed her chant.
"By the light of the Radiant Goddess, become blades of light and shatter that evil soul!"
Dozens of swords of light appeared around Laffey, spinning with dazzling points too bright to look at.
With a downward sweep of her hand, the blades shot toward Vicious in a spectacular display, their terrifying power churning the very air and tearing the sky.
Calmly watching the oncoming storm of light, Vicious waited until the blades were inches away, then burst into a mass of black bats.
The bats scattered; wherever a light sword struck one, it dissolved into blood that instantly re-formed into another bat. Countless bats regrouped, and Vicious reappeared in the sky, completely unscathed.
She gripped her rapier, tilted the blade, and with a clear ring shot toward Laffey once more.
