Before I could start the car, Macy's call came through.
I glanced at the time. Ten already. Too late for her energy, too early for how tired I felt.
I answered, and her excited voice filled my ear immediately. "Babe, guess where I am now."
I let out a small breath, thinking for a moment before answering, "Q City."
"Damn!" she cursed, laughing on the other end. "Ms. Stovall, you're so boring."
A faint smile pulled at my lips. "You've known me long enough. So? Did you find a good place?"
The underground parking space of Fuller Corporation was too empty, the silence stretching in a way that didn't feel natural. Even her voice came back slightly hollow through the speaker, echoing around me like the space was listening.
It made the back of my neck tighten.
"Mhm," she said, still full of energy. "Q City is actually really nice. Peaceful. I've been here a few days now and I like the pace. The air feels… lighter. I think I could settle here."
