Her voice faded behind me, but I didn't stop. I went straight back to my room and closed the door, shutting out everything that felt too close, too loud, too sharp. The apartment felt heavy again, like unseen eyes still lingered even in silence.
I forced myself back to work for Fuller Corporation. Tomorrow, the bidding for the audit would begin, and I couldn't afford distraction. Not now. Not with everything already unsettled inside me.
For a moment, I thought that middle-aged man would show up again. But he didn't. The absence only made my thoughts louder, like something unfinished was waiting just out of reach.
Morning came too fast.
Sunlight spilled into the apartment by eight. J City was already warming up, the air thick with summer heat. Macy was still asleep, but my body woke on its own after days of restlessness that wouldn't ease.
