After finishing everything that required my name, I handed the documents to Joe. The papers felt lighter in my hands than they should have. Jared had already gone into the operating room, leaving the rest of us outside.
Joe didn't take them calmly. His face darkened as he looked at me. "Scarlett, what's this supposed to mean?"
"Isn't it obvious?" I met his gaze, my brows slightly drawn. "I've done what I needed to do. There's no reason for me to stay."
His expression twisted with anger. "Is that how you act as a wife? Your mate is lying in there, and you're already thinking about leaving. Is this what a bond means to you?"
For a second, I almost laughed.
I glanced at Rebecca. She stood off to the side, pale and shaken, like the world had just collapsed on her. Then I looked back at Joe.
A quiet laugh slipped out anyway.
