Chapter 154 - Fractured Conversations

"Surely he must have been upset when the child was suddenly gone just like that, right?" I asked, keeping my voice steady even though my chest felt tight.

His brows drew together into a deep furrow. "This matter is already in the past!" His tone was sharp, final, like he wanted to shut the topic down completely.

"I know. I'm just asking." I nodded, though my thoughts kept pushing forward. The words slipped out before I could stop them, soft and uncertain, "I'm just wondering if I ever have a miscarriage, will you feel upset?"

"Scarlett!" His voice rose suddenly, and his grip on my arm tightened. The pressure made my breath catch. His expression darkened. "Who did you meet today?"

Pain throbbed through my head, dull and constant. I leaned forward, resting my head against his chest, too drained to argue further. "It doesn't matter. As you said, it's all in the past."
