Chapter 156 - Fractured Loyalty

The amusement in his face faded the moment my words settled between us. His brows drew together, tension tightening his expression as he looked at me. "Scarlett, is separation something you take so lightly?"

I lowered my gaze. Lightly? Nothing connected to Rebecca had ever felt simple. Not in the quiet shifts in his tone, not in the way his attention had once lingered elsewhere.

He didn't wait for a reply. His hand closed around mine and guided me into the car, the motion firm but controlled. The engine started, and we drove in silence, the air inside the vehicle heavy with unspoken thoughts.

When we arrived at the villa, his phone rang. I stayed seated, watching him from the side. His eyes dropped to the screen, and I saw the change in his expression.

"We're home. Rest, don't overthink." He ended the call with a quick swipe, then turned to me. His gaze softened, just slightly. "There has never been anything between us. Not then, and not now."
