I nodded slowly. "He saw the officers coming and started hurting himself before they could reach him."
Ashton studied my face carefully. "Did he know you before tonight?" The question landed exactly where I had been hoping it would not go.
A few seconds passed. Then I told him the truth. "Rebecca used to send him after me."
"When?"
"Around the time I first took over AC Credit and HiTech."
His frown deepened. "That is not possible. Rebecca could not have been behind something like that."
I laughed softly, but there was nothing warm in it. "I know she still means something to you."
"That is not what I am saying." His voice was flat and certain. "She had only just reconnected with Cameron's circle back then. She would not have had access to someone like Savini."
"You are probably right," I said. "She was never sharp enough to pull off something that complicated on her own anyway."
