He looked at me and said quietly, "I asked Mrs. Eriksen to take them away."
That was all it took. Something in me broke loose, the last thread of composure I had been holding onto snapping cleanly. He stood and reached for his jacket. "Let's go to the hospital."
I pushed him back. "Ashton, just give me the pills. I only want to sleep. Can't you let me have one peaceful night? Why do you keep dragging me out when all I need is rest?"
Mrs. Eriksen had heard the noise from down the hall and called out quickly, her voice pitched to carry without alarming. "The pills are with me. I'll bring them right now. Letty, just calm down, I'm coming!"
Ashton moved to block her. "She'll become dependent on them. Don't."
"Shut up, Ashton!" I turned to Mrs. Eriksen fully. "Bring me the pills. Now."
She hesitated and looked to him for approval, which was its own kind of answer.
