Chapter 9 - A roof, an anomaly, and a sun

Time:1500hrs

Anomalies detected:Runners

**Description**

Runners are corrupted humans of unknown origins.

Objective:Terminate.

The blue system screen hovered before Sunny the moment he stepped out the portal, finding himself on a rooftop floor.

Moonlight was already at the edge of the roof, looking down, as though assessing the area.

"I don't see it," she said, noticing Sunny approach.

"It?" He was certain he had seen Runners on the screen, meaning multiple. Did she not get notifications like he did?

"The runner we're here for," she said, rolling her eyes.

"I thought there was more of– nevermind."

An explosive sound filled the air, followed by the hooting of cars and screams.

"There's our first lead, you should hold onto this," Moonlight said, handing Sunny a short sword.

"What's this?"

She stared at him, quietly for a moment, before answering, "My penis, what does it look like to you?"

A laughing voice echoed Sunny's head.

"You definitely deserved that one," the voice said.

"Okay, let's get down there," Moonlight said, leaning over the edge.

Sunny looked around. There was no way for them to get down from the rooftop.

Before he could ask just how they could do that, a foot met him, sending him over the edge, screaming as he went down.

"Fuck..." the words escaped him, before he realised he was still alive.

The fall hurt, just like any would, but he wasn't dead. He should have been, but he wasn't.

Disbelief gripped him. He patted himself down, face, chest, arms, torso, everything. Nothing was broken.

"What the hell?"

"Welcome to SAGS bitch, physics doesn't apply to us!" Moonlight yelled before letting out a hearty laugh.

How was that even possible? Sunny wondered. If he could fall from atop a building well over five storeys High unharmed, was he invincible now?

No– he couldn't be, then how was it that system users died? Moonlight, Luna and the System all said that for a system to transfer them the user must die.

"There!" Moonlight called out, pointing at a creature that looked nothing close to human.

Corrupted humans my ass, Sunny thought to himself.

What kind of corruption makes you have six limbs, each well over six feet long and able to run through vehicles like empty cardboard boxes?

"Come on!" Moonlight called out, running towards the accidents, a gun materialising in hand.

Sunny looked at the sword she had given him on the ground.

Why couldn't he get a gun too? Did he really have to use a short range weapon on his first day?

Sigh.

He followed.

Moonlight was fast, too fast. Within no time, Sunny was so behind that he figured running after them was a ridiculous attempt, and simply a waste of energy.

Everything was chaos, screams everywhere, everyone busy running, sirens blaring, cars crashed into each other.

Chaos.

If he couldn't deal with the thing, he might as well help the normal people, Sunny concluded.

The vehicles were lighter than usual. Not necessarily light, but they were manageable. Vehicles tat had crashed, falling on civilians and couldn't be lifted by anyone else seemed to abide to his hand. After putting in a bit of effort, the vehicles lifted, giving enough room for people to be rescued.

"What the hell?" Sunny asked himself, backing away from a semi-truck that he had managed to get off the ground.

A multi tonne vehicle.

He got it off the ground.

He looked at his hands, then up at the mirrored glass walls of a building. What he saw looked like him, but last he checked lifting tonnes of metal wasn't something anyone was capable of.

"Congratulations, you have discovered your heightened strength," the voice in Sunny's head spoke.

"What?"

"Did you think system users fight anomalies with normal strength? It's obvious you get to be better than everyone else," the voice said, sarcasm filling its tone.

"Right,right."

It dawned on him. The system had said Runners, and he had already seen one of them.

He quickly turned, assessing the surrounding. System was either wrong or there were others around.

Nothing.

Sunny sighed, relief weighing heavy.

Not as heavy as the blow that sent him into a pole with a runner storming past.

The thing was fast, faster than he could see. And he was somehow supposed to deal with it.

Maybe the cathedral wasn't that bad, the thought tried to creep in, before it was almost instantly brushed off alongside the dust as Sunny rose back up.

Surprisingly, he wasn't in too much pain, for someone that had flown a couple feet and into a metal pole making it bend, it was ridiculous. For someone that had fallen from an six storey building unharmed, however, it seemed pretty normal.

"Fuck," He groaned, picking up the sword.

It was heavy, he could tell by how it scratched the ground. But he had no problem lifting it. Of course he didn't.

**weapon acquired**

Moon cleave.

Sunny didn't have enough time to read through the text before he was hit again, barely seeing the thing as it came.

"What the hell am I even supposed to do here?" He asked himself.

"You're weak," the lady in his head spoke again.

"And you're useless," He struck back.

"I was going to help you but why don't you do it yourself then..."

"No, wait a second-"

Another hit.

If he didn't know any better, he'd say he was being attacked by more than one of those things. A very coordinated attack.

But if they couldn't harm him in the first place, then why were they even trying?

Of course the moment he thought of it something like that had to happen.

There was something moving, at the corner of his eye, he saw it. It lingered long enough for him to see, as though it wanted him to.

After a bit of consideration, Sunny got in one of the buildings, and straight into the elevator, going up to the roof.

There he waited.

Just as he had anticipated, it stopped just outside the building. It was big. It's size was not the kind of size that would be expected of something so quick.

Then again, the events that Sunny had just gone through weren't really the kind to be called normal.

It started climbing.

"What a pest."

"I see what you're planning here..." The voice echoed.

Sunny remained quiet, watching the runner climb. It climbed fast, too fast.

He gripped the sword in hand, pointing it down, waiting for the perfect moment. His eyes locked with the sunken eyes of the Runner, its face was torn, as if it had been ripped out and put back on the wrong side.

He took in a deep breath and held it.

When the moment came, he leapt, sword aimed, handle well gripped.

The Runner ungripped the walls, attempting to catch him mid-air, but he slipped.

He was small.

The blade dug through the Runner's mouth, down its throat, drawing a sputtered roar from it as they fell.

Silence followed the crash.

It was dead.
