The bitterness in Maya settled deeper, quiet and unannounced, finding the space it intended to occupy.
She returned to the chair beside Ethan's bed and sat, folding her hands in her lap, composing her expression into the arrangement appropriate to a woman keeping vigil beside someone she cared for.
Beneath the surface of that composure, something had shifted. Small, and not yet named, and pointed in a direction she had not consciously chosen.
But it was there. And it was not moving.
The room did not change around her.
The machines maintained their steady rhythm. The soft hum of equipment threaded through the quiet. Ethan's chest continued its shallow rise and fall, the only reliable proof of life in the stillness pressing against the walls.
