Silence crashed over the room.
Marcus stared at him.
Kade did not move.
Even the flames dancing within the fireplace seemed strangely distant.
His eyes slowly shifted from the physician...
...to the sleeping child...
...and finally to Dakota.
An impossible thought surfaced within his mind.
Dakota had always believed the daughter she delivered had died at birth.
Takoda had grown up believing she had never known her real mother.... But the way she had gotten closer after meeting Dakota...
If the physician was telling the truth...
Then someone had stolen far more than a child.
Someone had stolen an entire family.
Silence stretched across the bedroom, heavy enough to suffocate every other sound.
Kade remained standing beside the bed, his gaze fixed on Dakota and Takoda as though trying to see what the physician claimed had been there all along.
His mind refused to accept it.
It simply refused.
Dakota had mourned the child she believed had died.
