Victor eventually pushed his chair back and rose from the table. "Finish your breakfast. I won't be gone long."
His mother looked toward him. "And Maya?"
"The healer is attending to her. If anything changes, I'll be informed immediately." Victor adjusted his shirt before turning toward the dining room doors, but he paused just before leaving and glanced back at the table. "Until I return, I don't want anyone disturbing her. Let the healer take care of whatever she needs."
With that, Victor walked out of the dining room, leaving the others to absorb the unexpected news. The doors closed behind him, and for a few moments, nobody spoke.
Karl slowly lowered his gaze toward the table while Ronan remained unusually still beside him. Kade Nightshade was in Nightfall City, less than an hour from their territory, and whatever had brought their sovereign into the region was clearly important enough for him to appear personally rather than simply send an order through his officials.
