Ronan glanced toward Maya before looking back at his mother. "Then come now. There is no reason for you to keep arguing with her."
His mother's expression hardened as she looked toward Maya again. "There is plenty of reason. She has been lying in this bed all morning while everyone else has been awake and working, and now she thinks she can speak to me however she pleases."
Ronan's brows drew together. "The healer told her to rest."
"I know what the healer said."
"Then why are you still arguing with her?"
"Because someone needs to remind her that this is not a place where she can simply do whatever she wants."
Maya remained silent, although the tension in her expression made it clear that every word was reaching her. Ronan noticed the way she continued leaning against the mattress and sighed quietly before addressing his mother again.
"Mother, just leave her alone."
The older woman turned toward him sharply. "You're defending her?"
"I'm telling you that she needs to rest."
