"I don't want to stay here anymore, Granny," Takoda cried, lifting her tearful face from Sera's shoulder. "Let's go back to the Capital. Let's go back to our home."
Her words made Kade stop pacing.
He looked toward her and listened as she continued to sob, and something inside him tightened. He knew very little about comforting children, but he could see that Takoda was frightened beyond what a child her age should have had to endure. Since they had come to Nightfall, one painful event had followed another, and now she had watched her brother become seriously ill, witnessed him lose control and attack Dakota, and then heard the violence of their shifting from outside the room. She had already been through enough, and Kade could see the fear settling deeply inside her.
