Takoda lifted her tear-stained face toward him.
"Home?"
We are going back to the Capital?"
"Yes, sweetheart." Kade gently rubbed her back. "We're going home."
He already heard her frustrations that she felt like being in Nightfall was becoming a nightmare, and he immediately wanted to change the environment.
The little girl lowered her head against his chest, and the tension in her small body gradually began to ease as she listened to her father's steady heartbeat.
Dakota looked at Cooper again. The thought of moving him after everything he had just endured frightened her, but leaving him in that condition any longer frightened her even more. She reached down and gently touched his cheek, her fingers lingering against his skin.
"My boy," she hoarsely whispered.
Kade moved closer and slipped an arm around her waist, drawing her against his side. "He will be fine.... He will get better." He tried to comfort her.
Dakota nodded, unable to take her eyes from Cooper.
