Meanwhile, Luna tried calling Maya again, but once more, there was no answer. She stared at her phone for a moment after the call went unanswered, her concern becoming increasingly difficult to hide as she lowered it into her lap.
"Mother, you're calling way too much," Thomas finally said, glancing at her. "She could simply be busy with the preparations."
Luna looked at him for a moment before letting out a quiet sigh. "Yeah..." she murmured, slipping the phone away. "Maybe she is."
Even at this point, none of them had thought about Dakota. It was almost as though they had truly cut her out of their lives, leaving her absence so complete that no one even considered asking where she was or what had become of her.
It was difficult to understand, especially when Luna was her mother. A mother was not supposed to forget her daughter so easily, yet Luna had not once thought to call Dakota or even wonder whether she was safe.
