The moment the singing stopped, the light in the entire church seemed to dim.
That ethereal and sorrowful melody had been like an invisible sedative; its disappearance was akin to snapping the last chain restraining a beast.
The silence lasted for less than half a second.
In the small pool in the corner of the church, the eyes of the lurking, hideous monster—which had originally emitted a faint blue light—seemed to be instantly injected with scalding lava.
The blue faded in an instant, replaced by a violent, bloodthirsty crimson that burned with a raging fury.
"Roar—!!!"
A roar that no creature on Earth could ever produce, a mix of pain and rage, suddenly erupted from its lipless mouth.
The sound waves were like a physical shockwave, making the stained glass of the church's dome hum and rattle as countless specks of dust rained down.
Along with this roar,
"Splash!"
The murky water was violently broken by a massive force as the monster crawled out, revealing its terrifying full form to the three of them.
Its size was comparable to an adult Tyrannosaurus Rex. Its bluish-black skin was covered in a slimy liquid that reflected a greasy sheen in the dim light.
Two disproportionately thick hind limbs supported its heavy body, its claws sinking deep into the church's hard stone floor, leaving clear gouges.
A massive, powerful tail swung behind it to maintain balance; with every sweep, it brought a gust of foul, fishy wind.
Its head, like an alien from a horror movie, had a smooth and elongated profile.
A cavernous maw suddenly opened, letting out a threatening roar at the three people by the door. Between rows of blade-like teeth hung nauseating, pungent mucus.
But what made one's skin crawl the most were the four incredibly thick tentacles growing from its back, waving wildly in the air like venomous snakes with lives of their own, lashing out at everything nearby.
Sturdy oak pews shattered like rotten wood under the lashes of the tentacles, splinters flying everywhere.
Leon's gaze swept toward its soft underbelly.
There, a prominent, massive dark-red scar was visible.
The skin tissue there was turned outward and the muscle fibers were torn, clearly a severe injury left by Noah's earth-shattering punch in the riverbed outside the village just moments ago.
It was precisely this wound that added a hint of obvious bluster to its ferocity.
It roared, destroyed, and displayed its power, but those red eyes burning with rage always held a trace of wariness, locked firmly onto Noah. Its body even subconsciously turned the injured belly to the other side, as if guarding against that terrifying fist capable of piercing through its torso.
"Leon, cover me!"
"Krauser, lure it out!"
Noah's voice was calm, as if the monster crawling out of a nightmare before him was just a math problem to be solved step by step.
Almost the instant his words fell, the three had already formed a perfect tactical coordination.
"Stop your roaring! You ugly lizard!"
Krauser's roar even drowned out the monster's; his ferocity as a top-tier warrior was fully displayed at this moment.
He felt no fear; instead, a primal fighting spirit was ignited within him.
The custom pistol in his hand let out a deafening boom. Large-caliber bullets carrying his fury slammed one after another into the monster's thick thighs.
Although the bullets couldn't penetrate the tough skin, the massive impact still caused the monster pain, making it stumble.
Leon's movements were more agile. His muzzle flashed as every bullet was accurately fired at the monster's side. The goal wasn't to cause damage but to use continuous fire to guide its attention, forcing its massive body step by step toward the open doors of the church.
"Roar!"
The monster was completely enraged. Ignoring the harassing attacks from Leon and Krauser, one of the tentacles on its back lashed out like lightning, whistling through the air as it smashed toward Krauser, who was closest.
Krauser's pupils constricted. Without thinking, he performed a desperate side-roll, narrowly avoiding the lethal blow.
"Bang!"
The tentacle slammed heavily onto the spot where he had just stood. The hard stone floor cracked like a spiderweb as if struck by a battering ram, sending stone fragments flying.
"Damn! This guy is strong!" Krauser cursed as he scrambled up, his heart still racing.
In the few seconds the monster was pinned down by the two of them,
Noah's figure left a blurry afterimage as he moved silently like a ghost along the church wall to the other side.
His target wasn't the monster, but the unconscious young girl lying on the floor.
His movements were lightning-fast. Before the monster could react, he had already gently picked up the girl and, with a few quick shifts, placed her in a relatively safe corner at the back of the church, far from the monster's reach.
"Boom!"
Noah's desert eagle finally let out its unique, heavy roar.
The.50 AE bullet spiraled and roared, accurately striking the unhealed wound on the monster's belly.
"Awooo—!"
A shrill, eardrum-piercing wail erupted from the monster's mouth.
The intense pain of a new injury added to the old one drove it into a complete frenzy.
It abandoned its attack on Leon and Krauser and spun around. Its crimson eyes locked onto Noah as its massive body smashed through several rows of pews, charging recklessly toward him.
It wanted to tear apart this tiny human who had caused it such agony!
Noah turned and ran without lingering, aiming for the open church doors.
The monster pursued relentlessly. Its massive size brought an unparalleled sense of pressure, each step making the entire church floor tremble.
Leon and Krauser immediately understood. They quickly retreated to the outside of the church on both sides, forming a crossfire outside the door. They continued to fire frantically at the emerging monster, further enraging it and luring it completely into the flooded open area outside the church.
"Splash, splash..."
The monster's massive body charged into the waist-deep water, kicking up enormous splashes.
In the open area, its massive size and terrifying tentacles became an even greater threat.
A tentacle swept across, creating a wall of water and forcing Leon and Krauser to retreat once more.
"Krauser! On the left! Get its attention!" Leon shouted, pulling the trigger repeatedly as bullets sparked against the monster's skull.
"I don't need you to tell me!" Krauser roared back. Like an angry bull, he retreated while frantically pouring fire into the monster, keeping its attention firmly on himself and Leon.
At that moment, behind them, a scene that Krauser was beginning to grow accustomed to played out once again.
In the waist-deep water, Noah gave a powerful kick.
The water surface seemed to explode like a depth charge, blasting open a huge crater.
Ignoring the water's resistance, his body shot up like a cannonball, landing precisely on the roof of a nearby two-story wooden house.
"He's going up again!" Krauser shouted during a gap in the suppressive fire, his voice a mix of shock and numbness.
Noah landed on the roof and looked down at the battle.
His gaze locked onto the mottled wall of a taller, abandoned building nearby, made of stone and wood.
He lowered his body, his feet pressing two shallow pits into the roof tiles, then exerted force again, climbing to the highest point of that building in a few bounds.
He stood on the edge of the wall, the strong wind whipping his clothes. Below him was the massive monster rampaging in the water.
In the center of that wall was a large vertical crack—the weak point of the entire structure.
He took a deep breath and squatted slightly, lowering his center of gravity.
Then, he placed his hands on the stones at the top of the wall.
With a low shout, he suddenly pushed forward with all his might!
"Crea... creak..."
The weathered old wall let out an overwhelmed groan.
Countless bits of dust and gravel fell from the crack.
Below, Leon and Krauser noticed Noah's actions. They exchanged a look and instantly understood his intention, increasing their fire to keep the monster's aggro locked on them, giving it no chance to look up.
"Rumble—!!!"
Finally, with an earth-shattering roar, the massive wall could no longer hold. It snapped in the middle and, carrying tons of stone and wood like a collapsing mountain, crashed down upon the rampaging monster below!
The monster seemed to sense the lethal threat from above; it let out a terrified roar and tried to dodge.
But it was too late.
"Thud!!!"
A heavy, heart-stopping impact exploded on the water's surface.
Countless stones slammed heavily onto the monster's back and head.
Its massive body, as if pressed down by an invisible divine hand, suddenly sank.
Its shrill screams were drowned out by the massive roar of the collapsing wall.
Enormous waves spread in all directions, nearly knocking Leon and Krauser off their feet.
When the dust and mist cleared slightly,
The once-mighty monster was now pinned underwater by a mountain of rubble, with only a mangled head and two weakly twitching tentacles exposed.
Dark green blood continuously poured from the gaps in the rubble, staining the surrounding floodwaters a bizarre color.
However, it was not yet dead.
To their horror, the monster used its last bit of strength to drag its mangled, broken body out from the gaps in the rubble bit by bit.
It looked back, its eyes dimmed but still filled with endless malice and fear, taking one last look at Noah standing on high.
Then, with a cry of unwilling defeat, it plunged into the deeper murky water and, dragging its heavily injured body, disappeared into the depths of the dark river channel, leaving no trace.
The surroundings finally fell completely silent, leaving only the sound of rushing water and the heavy breathing of the three men.
"Let's go."
Noah jumped lightly from the height, landing in the water with a small splash.
Leon and Krauser said no more and quickly turned back toward the church.
Leon carefully picked up the still-unconscious girl. She was very light and seemed exceptionally small in his burly embrace.
The three went around to the back of the church where there was a simple wooden pier. A small speedboat was docked there, swaying gently with the waves.
This was clearly the escape route prepared for them by the deceased informant.
The three quickly boarded the speedboat, and Noah skillfully started the engine.
With a roar, the speedboat cut through the murky water and sped upstream toward the source of this river of death—Javier's lair.
The speedboat sped along the channel, the cold river wind on their faces slightly dissipating the heat from the recent battle.
Leon took off his jacket and gently covered the girl, then silently checked his weapons and replenished his ammunition.
Noah focused on driving the speedboat, his sharp eyes scanning the complex channel ahead.
Krauser leaned against the gunwale and pulled a half-soaked pack of cigarettes from his tactical vest, only to find to his annoyance that his lighter was broken.
Irritated, he crumpled the cigarette into a ball and threw it into the water.
His gaze swept back and forth between the calm Noah and the silent Leon. His face, usually marked by a certain defiance, was now full of gravity.
He was silent for a long time, so long that Leon thought he wouldn't speak again.
"Fine."
"I don't want to keep guessing," Krauser's voice was low and raspy.
He turned to face the two of them, his sharp eyes no longer holding any mockery or doubt, only a pure search for the unknown.
"What exactly was that thing just now? And those walking corpses from before, the spiders, the toads..."
"You said you've fought monsters like that before, right?"
He paused, his tone becoming extremely serious.
"Can you tell me about those experiences?"
Leon stopped cleaning his gun and looked up, exchanging a glance with Noah.
Noah's eyes remained calm as he gave a slight nod.
Some things cannot be hidden.
Especially after a battle like this, for a top-tier warrior like Krauser, a reasonable explanation was the foundation for maintaining team trust.
Leon took a deep breath, as if inhaling the rotting, foul air buried deep in his memories back into his lungs.
"It all began in 1998, in a city called 'Raccoon City'..."
Leon's voice, with a faint, ethereal raspiness, began to slowly recount the tale.
He spoke of the city completely consumed by the t-virus, the endless dark corridors of the Police Station, and those who were once citizens, colleagues, and friends, only to become walking corpses with nothing left but hunger.
He spoke of the monster encountered in the sewers, with skin as smooth as if it had been licked, possessing a lethal long tongue and claws—the "Licker."
Noah added details at the right moments.
In a calmer, more objective tone, he described the existence of the g-virus and the scientist who, in pursuit of evolution, mutated continuously until he became an indescribable mass of flesh—William Birkin.
They told of the ultimate bio-weapon known as the "Tyrant," who wore a trench coat and, like an indestructible terminator, pursued them through the Police Station.
They told of how the entire city was ultimately wiped off the map in a sea of fire and explosions.
Through their narration, an underground world built of viruses, desire, and madness—filled with death and despair—slowly pulled back its bloody curtain before Krauser.
Of course, they also tacitly left out the two most critical parts.
Leon didn't mention the woman in the red qipao with a mysterious identity who had left a complex mark on his heart—Ada Wong.
Noah made no mention whatsoever of the mysterious man—Trant.
The speedboat's engine roared.
The scenery on both banks receded rapidly.
Krauser said nothing, just listening quietly.
There was no expression on his face, but deep in his sharp eyes, a storm seemed to be brewing.
From initial disbelief to shock halfway through, and finally to silence.
His solid military worldview—built on firearms, tactics, and human enemies—was being broken down, ground up, and reshaped inch by inch by the calm yet blood-soaked narratives of Leon and Noah.
He just listened quietly, letting those terrifying facts beyond imagination wash over his perception.
