Chapter 13 - Devil Fruits, Trading and the Multiverse Chapter 13

Hearthome City – Route 209 Tunnel Entrance

- Souta -

Pokémon, that's the world I ended up jumping to; to say I was excited would be an understatement. I think most people who grew up with Pokémon would dream of coming to this world; just seeing a Starly in person for the first time had me grinning from ear to ear, even if it seemed like it was looking down on me.

Every step I took through the tunnel had me vibrating in excitement at the idea of being able to see a gym battle in person, maybe even a contest in the future.

After exiting the tunnel to the city, I could tell why it was one of the most popular places to live; it was stunning, and unlike the games, the city was massive. It was vibrant, colourful and stylish; everyone I saw had a smile on their face, laughing together with their family or their Pokémon.

It wasn't just the city that felt vibrant; the world did as well. It felt brighter, cleaner than my world, and not just the air, but opening my senses to the world, I could feel that it felt purer, like going from swimming in pond water to fresh clear water. Maybe the world doesn't have pollution; either they don't produce it or they have a way of negating it altogether.

Sitting down on a bench and just watching people go about their day, I think about what I need to do next.

One of the first issues I need to deal with is getting an ID. I can't really use my world's ID; I could find someone shady to make me one, but that would require having money first and knowing where to look, or the other option is to head to the police station and lie about being robbed and teleported away. The issue with that is they may question me with a psychic Pokémon.

Second on the list is to use extract on a Pokémon and its evolutions. If I make a Zoan, how will it work? Can the person who consumes it evolve at some point, or are they locked to the first evolution?

Third would be to gather as much elemental energy as I can from Pokémon with extract to hopefully make a logia fruit.

And finally, to get as many types of berries I can get my hands on to test the effects the berries provide, I'll need to find out if they can grant the effects they have on Pokémon to people as well; if so, taking them back home to grow my own would be another thing to sell at the store, as well as potion materials.

After resting for a bit on the bench, I decided to go with the police station option. It's risky, but if I want to catch Pokémon without being seen as a potential poacher, I will likely need proper ID.

I should try making an ID that can morph to what I need with a mystic fruit. Ditto could probably help with that, but finding one will be a bit of an issue.

While taking in the sights of the town and asking people for directions to the nearby police station, following the directions given, I finally ended up finding it. Taking a deep breath, I enter the building and walk up to the receptionist who greets me.

"Hi, my name's Vivian. Welcome to Hearthome Police Centre. How can we help you today?" She asks politely with a smile.

"Hello, my name's Souta Takao, and I'd like to report an incident that involves myself," I say, scratching my cheek nervously.

"No problem. Could you please tell me what this relates to, and I'll have it forwarded so one of our officers can speak with you?" She says more seriously now.

"That would be great, thank you. I appeared in the forest at the east entrance of the city. I'm missing my ID and money, and I don't know where I am. The only thing I have on me is my briefcase, but it just has a few changes of clothes." I say with a sad smile.

Before coming to the police station, I went to a toilet stall to enter the briefcase, putting everything but the clothes into the house.

"Wait right here; I'll go get Officer Jenny right away." She says, standing up quickly before rushing through the door behind her.

Grimacing slightly, hopefully what I said wasn't too much.

After a short wait, an actual real-life officer, Jenny, walked through the door with Vivian. Like all officers, Jenny had dark teal hair that was tied up in a bun. She was quite beautiful and was wearing red lipstick with this region's police uniform.

"Hello, young man, my name is Julia Jenny. You may refer to me as Officer Jenny. If you could please follow me so we can get an idea of the full incident in order to help you out the best we can." She says kindly while giving off a disciplined vibe.

"That's fine." I say before turning to Vivian and thanking her for helping.

"Just doing my job, I hope you manage to sort everything out." She says politely before sitting back in her chair.

"This way, please. I would like to inform you that due to the nature of the incident, we will be heading to a meeting room to go over a few questions. If you are uncomfortable with any of the questions asked, you can let me know and we will move on, but all the information you can provide would be appreciated in order to help you the best we can." She lets me know as we are walking along.

"Thank you, I'll try to let you know what I can." I say, nodding, but internally I groaned.

As we were walking down the hallway, we ended up walking past an open grounds training area with quite a few officers training what looks to be first evolution Pokémon; they had quite a selection, but they were mainly canine-based Pokémon.

From what I could see, they had Vulpix, Growlithe, Lilipup, Poochyena and Electrike. The majority were made up of Lilipup's, while the rest there were only 1 or 2 of that type of Pokémon. While the non-canine Pokémon consisted of Machop and Starly, it was quite a diverse set of Pokémon, though I didn't see any psychic types.

While watching them, there was one person that stood out the most to me, and that was another officer, Jenny, with the only Growlithe in the group, who had me looking between her and Officer Jenny next to me. The only difference I could pick out was that the one training had their hair in a ponytail and didn't wear any lipstick.

"Sorry, didn't mean to stop and stare." I say sheepishly.

"No problem; it's not every day someone gets to see the new recruits training. This is a fresh batch out of the academy along with their partners." She says from beside me, watching them train together with their Pokémon.

Smiling gently while looking towards the other officer, Jenny, she says, "The one with the Growlithe that had you looking between us is my sister."

"Are you both twins?" I ask.

Laughing lightly, she says, "No, she's my younger sister by 5 years."

I knew Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy all looked the same in the anime, but I didn't think it would be an actual thing now that I'm here.

"You look identical apart from how you wear your hair and makeup."

Looking confused, she asks, "Do you not have the Jenny clan from where you are from?"

Shaking my head, I say, "No, we don't."

She mutters something I don't quite catch before saying, "Well, it's not really a secret, but the Jenny and Joy clans have been around for a very long time. No one knows if it's true or not, but it was said that both clans were blessed by the creator to protect both humans and Pokémon. In exchange, we have an easier time working together with Pokémon in our respective fields."

"Amazing, does your clan hold records from the past detailing any of this?" I was intrigued by what she told me; if it's true, the creator they speak of would be Arceus.

"Hmm, I'm not sure; the main clan compound most likely has records, but I've never been there myself. As I said, we don't know if it's true or not; it's just a story that gets passed down." She says, shrugging.

"While it would be an interesting topic to talk about, I believe we have another issue to resolve first. Come along." She says, turning on her heel and walking back down the hallway.

"Right, sorry, got lost in thought." I say catching up to her.

We eventually reached the meeting room; the walls were beige in colour, there was a table in the centre with 4 padded chairs to sit on, and on the walls were various pictures of officers and their Pokémon and even some group photos of graduation classes with their class name and date engraved into the metal tag on the bottom of the frame.

"Please take a seat. Before we begin, would you like something to drink? We have tea, coffee or water."

"Just water, please."

"No problem, I'll be right back."

After a few minutes she comes back with a glass of water for me and what looks to be coffee for herself before sitting down.

"Do you mind if I bring my partner out while I ask the questions? He'll just be sitting next to me." She asks politely.

Holding back a grimace, I agree, hoping it's not a psychic type.

Reaching into her police-issued jacket, she pulls out a small Poké Ball before enlarging it and releasing an Umbreon next to her.

I was in awe seeing an actual Poké Ball being used, which Officer Jenny picked up on.

"Umbre, breon Umbreon." announces itself before climbing onto the chair next to Officer Jenny.

Umbreon was a stunning-looking Pokémon; its fur was well taken care of, as were its claws and fangs. It sat regally on the chair while always keeping 1 eye on me, and the yellow rings on its body seemed to pulse with a glow every so often.

At least it wasn't a psychic Pokémon, though can dark types know if someone is lying, or is it just a feeling they get when someone does? I wish I knew more about what Pokémon could do.

"This is my long-time partner Umbra; we've been together since I started the academy." She says, smiling, while scratching between his ears, making the yellow rings on his body flare up, clearly happy with the attention he was getting.

"Right, we'll start the questions now if that's ok with you?" She asks, flipping a notebook open that she pulled out of her pocket.

"Sure."

"What's your full name and age?"

"Souta Takao, 17"

"I was told you appeared in the forest to the east of the city with a briefcase containing only clothing, and you have no ID or money. Is that correct?"

"It is, yes."

Umbreon's ears were pointed straight up, but for a second there was the slightest flick before staying straight up.

"If it's not too uncomfortable for you, may I see inside the briefcase?"

"Sure, I have no problem with that." Having already set it to the muggle version of the briefcase, I put it onto the table in front of us before opening it and pulling out all my folded clothing.

After taking everything out and making sure the case was fully empty, she saw no issues before telling me it was ok to put everything back.

"Thank you. I apologise if this seems like an interrogation, but displacement via Pokémon is a serious matter, and with you missing your ID and money, then this could very well be a crime committed by a trainer and his Pokémon, so investigating everything we can regarding the incident is important," she says solemnly.

"I understand; you're just doing what you need to do."

"Did you feel anything before you appeared in the forest?"

"Hmm, I felt the feeling of vertigo before landing on the grass of the forest."

"That does indicate a sign of teleportation being used; some people have issues with it, while others it doesn't bother at all."

"Did you see anyone around you before it happened?"

"No, I didn't see anyone."

"Hypnosis could have been used; Umbra, do you feel any lingering psychic effects at all?" She asks her partner, getting a shake of the head in return and a soft "Um".

"No hypnosis, or a Pokémon extremely skilled with its use, or a dark type could also be involved. How about any dark energy? Do you feel any on him?" She asks again.

Umbreon's rings glow again while he squints at me, seeming a bit confused for a moment before nodding slightly but unsure and saying, "Bre, Breon.

"I see, Umbra picked up a slight confirmation of dark type energy on you, which makes it possible that hypnosis was used, making you forget what happened before being teleported away. Unfortunately, due to the involvement of a dark type, this will make it harder to recover the memories lost. I am sorry about that." She says, quite angry at what's been done.

This is probably the best outcome; I feel bad about lying, but with her creating a narrative of what could have happened and her partner backing her up on that energy he felt, then as long as I don't deny anything, I should be fine, though what I don't get is the dark-type energy that Umbreon was sensing.

Rolling the thought through my head and mentally listing what it could be, I realised it most likely is my Yoki. Yokai are naturally dark-aligned creatures; that's why he looked unsure but nodded anyway since he felt dark energy on me. Honestly, I'm quite lucky it's worked out so well at the moment.

"I'm just glad no harm was done to me." I finally replied as I smiled at her.

"While that is true and I am also glad for it, the next person might not be so lucky." She says sternly.

I just nodded, agreeing with her.

"Where were you last before being teleported?"

"I was in my store's break room."

"What do you sell at your store?"

"Books, exotic fruits, anything that people might find interesting – I don't really have a set product."

"Previously you said there was no one from the Jenny clan where you lived. Can I ask where that is?"

"Kyoto."

"Is that the country name or city?"

"It's a major city in the country of Japan. It's quite a small country. Could you let me know where I am currently located?" I'm not too worried about using the real names of where I'm from; they will most likely mark it off as an undiscovered area on the map. While I don't know much about fallers, I'm pretty sure they were just people from another version of the Pokémon world.

"I don't believe I've heard of either before. I'll need to check a map just in case and reach out to an expert if nothing shows up. You are currently located in Sinnoh."

"You seemed quite amazed at the Poké Ball earlier. Do you not have those where you are from?"

"No, we don't use any devices like that, not that I know of anyway."

"What about Pokémon? Do you not have them? If so, how do you capture them if they wish to be part of your team?"

"Hmm, we don't use the term 'Pokémon', but we do form pacts with creatures that agree to become partners with us; they help us, and we care for them, that type of thing." I say, I technically didn't lie, and she'll just think it's a cultural difference.

"I see, it might seem rude, so I apologise, but it seems where you're from hasn't advanced in technology about Pokémon with the way you talk about pacts and still refer to them as creatures, so it will be much more difficult to find where you once lived if it's such an isolated country."

The questions carried on for a while longer, but they were easy to answer, such as 'Had I been to any of the other countries under the PLO?' (Pokémon League Organisation) which she listed out for me, but after what felt like forever, I was finally able to leave.

We are standing in the reception area of the police station, and Officer Jenny was offering some final words about what she could do to help me out, since I was technically 'stranded' here.

"Thank you for your cooperation. I know the questions took a while, but hopefully it can get us somewhere trying to find where you're from.

For now I can't do much else about it, so I'm sorry, but I will speak with the immigration office due to your current situation to get you a temporary region ID provided. I would also recommend applying for a trainer ID at the Pokémon Centre; the PLO provides a small monthly stipend to new trainers. This will help you while you settle in.

And finally, I'll call the nurse Joy working there to explain the situation as well as provide lodging and food while you're in the city."

"Thank you very much for all your help, and don't worry too much; I'll treat it like an adventure. I'm sure I'll eventually go back." I say waving off her worries; I'll look at getting a gift for her with all the trouble I've given her, especially since she'll be asking a professor who is frequently involved in searching for new islands to keep an eye out.

"It's no problem; here's my number. If any issues appear or you manage to remember anything more, please call me." She says, handing me a small slip of paper from her notepad.

"I will do, thanks again." I say, pocketing the slip of paper before waving goodbye, 'First stop, Pokémon Centre.'

Hearthome City – Pokémon Centre

- Souta -

It's been 2 days since I spoke to Officer Jenny. I got fast-tracked for a temporary region ID, which I picked up yesterday. The woman I spoke with at the office took my picture and told me to wait 5 minutes, and then I was out the door.

She wasn't rude by any means, but the Glameow in her office definitely suited her.

Meeting nurse Joy, on the other hand, was wonderful; I can't say I've ever met a person whose whole being radiated with kindness.

When I managed to find the Pokémon centre and provided my name, I was immediately whisked away by her and told about the room I would be staying in before she asked me if I was hungry and showed me to the cafe.

I also registered for the trainer ID like Officer Jenny recommended, and Nurse Joy said I could pick it up today. After asking where I could apply for a place to store the stipend, I was told the trainer's ID would act like a bank card as well, so that saved me the hassle of applying for a separate one.

Putting the last piece of clothing on after a quick morning shower and clean, I prepare to head down for a quick breakfast.

The Pokémon centre was much larger in person than portrayed in the shows and games; the left wing of the building led into a sleeping area providing a few rooms for trainers to stay the night; attached to the right side of the building was a small sit-in cafe that handled breakfast, lunch and dinner; and finally, the largest section was at the back but was only accessible to staff and trainers whose Pokémon were getting treatment if it was serious.

They also didn't have the standard healing machine; instead, behind the counter was a giant half sphere attached to the wall where Nurse Joy or whoever was manning The station would slot the Poké Balls into an open section that would bring up the data in front of them before they sent them off into the back end of the building to be healed properly.

When the trainer finally arrived to pick up their Pokémon, they would have to provide their trainer ID, which was scanned, prompting the machine to bring their Poké Balls out from where they were being stored.

The information on the healing provided and what to look out for could be accessed on the official Pokémon Centre app if they linked their trainer ID. If not, a detailed report was printed out automatically and handed to the trainer.

Finished with breakfast, I head to the counter, which has nurse Joy on duty.

"Good morning, Souta, you'll be happy to know I have your trainer ID; just give me a few seconds to collect your stuff." She says, smiling brightly.

She spends a couple of seconds rummaging through the cupboard under the counter before placing it all on top of it.

"Here's your card. It has 100,000 PokéDollars, which is the amount you'll receive each month for a year, at which point you'll have to look at funding yourself if you wish to continue as a trainer, either through sponsorships or tournaments. Next is a belt and 6 Poké Balls. They have already been registered to your ID, but in the future you'll need to hold the empty Poké Ball button for 5 seconds when it's glowing blue, scan your ID, and you'll know it's completed if the light blinks green 3 times.

Capturing a Pokémon in an unregistered Poké Ball is illegal, so please make sure you register any that you purchase." She says with a serious tone.

"Thank you, I'll make sure I do. How do you know if someone uses an unregistered Poké Ball though?"

"All Poké Balls created need to be registered in the PLO database, so when a Pokémon is captured illegally, it will flag in the system. The only issue then is finding out who purchased the Poké Ball, though any machines that involve the use of a Poké Ball will flag the authorities when used.

On the other hand, a registered Poké Ball will store the capture data to your PLO trainer profile; there are IDs people can apply for, such as a partner ID. Those are for people who don't wish to battle but want their Pokémon registered under their name."

"I see; I guess they've got to crack down on potential poachers as much as they can."

"Yes, unfortunately some manage to acquire Poké Balls illegally which aren't attached to any databases." She says sadly.

"Don't worry, I'm sure they'll get caught eventually." I say, trying to cheer her back up.

"You're right, the criminals will get caught one day, and we nurses will be there to treat the Pokémon that come from it." She says, doing a cute fist pump.

We talked for a bit longer, mainly about her days as a trainee nurse, before I decided to head out after saying goodbye since people were starting to enter the Pokémon centre to get their Pokémon healed.

I decided today I would head over to the berry farm to see if I could trade some of the normal fruits I had for berries or money if they are willing to purchase them. They do have normal fruits here like apples and oranges, but nothing exotic like kiwis, dragonfruit or mangos, not that I've seen anyway, so it would be a good time to check and maybe get something out of it.

Stepping out onto Route 208 after a warning about the dangers of going into Mount Coronet without a Pokémon, I made my way down the road, and after a short journey, there was a right turn that led to the berry farm.

There were a lot of Pokémon on the way to the berry farm; Wurmple's in the trees, and I spotted the odd Caterpie, Bidoof's were lazing about in the grass or chewing the bark off the trees. There was also a large pond that had a few Psyduck sitting around holding their heads or sleeping; inside the pond consisted mainly of Barboach and a few Magikarp.

Walking over to the pond, I dip my hands in the water, hoping to catch the attention of one of them. After a while, a curious Barboach approached and wrapped its whiskers around my finger, allowing me to activate Extract.

After a few seconds of being inspected by the Barboach, it wanders off, but not before I can rub a finger over its slimy forehead and thank it.

Looking at the cylinder in my hand, I think about the options I saw. Like with most things, I could extract the spirit, but my idea of getting elemental energies was shot down instantly. Instead of getting earth or water, I got the options for Type Energy: Ground and Type Energy: Water, so I just grabbed the ground one.

Moving a bit further into the woods and facing away from the road, I decided to test making a mystic fruit with the extract I just got.

Placing an apple down with the extracted type energy I begin the process, which surprisingly works without an issue. I had expected to stop partway and probably need more, but no, the fruit was there on the floor, the apple was brown, and instead of swirls, there was an outline of small mountains all the same shape indented into the apple.

Picking it up, the system immediately pops up.

Hidden achievement completed: Create a new fruit type, unlocked [Typia Unrestricted].

[Typia Unrestricted]

The amount of Typia fruit consumed per world is unrestricted.

What, checking the fruit immediately? I see what the system means by Typia.

[Type-Type Fruit Model: Ground]

The consumer of the mystic fruit gains the physiology of a Pokémon and gains the typing of the fruit eaten. This will also allow for evolution to occur; the number of evolutions will be based on the power of the consumer before eating the mystic fruit, up to a maximum of 3. Eating this mystic fruit negates [Passive: Will of Three]. This fruit can only be consumed by creatures and inanimate objects; inanimate objects will gain a sentience akin to a newborn Pokémon. The consumer may awaken the power of the fruit, granting them the ability to Mega Evolve until they run out of stamina.

Fruit Type: Typia

Fruit used: Apple

Weakness: Follows the rules of the Pokémon world.

Laughing hysterically for a good minute and scaring away the nearby Pokémon, I decided to lie in the grass and let myself calm down. I can create Pokémon, and this mystic fruit isn't limited like the others; multiple can be eaten without issue. People not being able to eat it isn't a problem, though losing the will of three passives is a bit sad, but still, the ability to create Pokémon with a fruit – professors in this world would go crazy if they ever found out.

Getting an idea, I sit up quickly. Pulling on our link, I summon Dennis to my hand, who just looks around curiously before looking at me and blinking.

Holding him in one hand and the mystic fruit in the other, I ask, "This fruit will give you the power to control the ground and allow you to get stronger. You don't have to eat it, but if you want to, you can." I can't really use big words with a niffler; sure, they understand somewhat, but they aren't smart enough to understand everything I say.

It looks at the fruit, tilting its head back and forth, clearly trying to think about what I was saying, and without warning, he leaps towards the fruit, taking a big bite out of it. For a second, he doesn't move, and then he begins to glow white, making me shield my eyes, and after a few seconds, it dies down.

In my hand is Dennis, slightly smaller than he was; his fur went from black to a dark brown. He had claws on his hands and feet meant for digging like a mole, he also had a much longer tail now that split slightly at the end like 3 claws. He still had a long snout, but his claws and stomach, where his pouch was, were all cream in colour. His arms were rough in texture, almost like sandpaper, and the pouch on his belly was extremely soft compared to the rest of his fur.

"Nif, nifflit, flit." He says, wiggling out of my grasp and onto the ground, checking his body.

Grabbing a Poké Ball from my belt and enlarging it, I kneel down to him and say, "I know we are connected already, but in this world, they use these little things to carry their partners around. Obviously, you won't have to stay inside if you don't want to, and you can go back to messing about in the briefcase if you prefer, so what do you say?"

"Flit, NIFFLIT!" He shouts, charging at the Poké Ball in my hand. Laughing, I lightly bonk him on the head with it which sucks him into the Poké Ball and after 1 wobble and a click, I officially caught my first self-made Pokémon.

Releasing him, I put him onto my shoulder and continue making my way towards the berry farm, unbeknownst to me capturing an unknown Pokémon flagged to the nearest Pokémon centre.

Thank you for reading.

This chapter is basically introducing the Pokémon world, and I know some might like the idea of him going to a police station but having ID in this type of world is a must, obviously the worlds I write about aren't going to have the exact same layout as the original but I'll try to explain most if not all the changes that crop up.

And yes the idea for the morphing ID came from Doctor Who.

New type of fruit acquired as well, I was going to sleep thinking about where the chapter was going to go and then the idea for a brand-new mystic fruit that creates Pokémon popped into my brain, so I went with it and Dennis got an upgrade he's now a Nifflit, I got AI to create some images so I'll post them at some point, they aren't great but it shows what I was going for at least.
