"So, you know my true name. Interesting~" she purred, sounding genuinely amused.
"What do you want?" I asked, leaning forward and resting my elbows on my knees. "Because if this is about setting up another date, I'm going to have to decline. Getting murdered isn't really on my schedule for today. Maybe next week."
"I forgot how much I enjoyed your voice," Kalawarner cooed, the breathy sound sending a weird, conflicting shiver down my spine. "A little bird told me that you're working with Rias Gremory now. I was wondering if that was actually true... I thought you had good taste in women, Shiro. Now I'm not so sure~"
She was teasing me. And honestly? The fact that she was casually bantering with me after trying to run me through with a spear of light was bizarrely attractive.
"Oh, are we getting a little jealous?" I shot back, a faint smirk touching my lips. "Unfortunately, my gorgeous girlfriend decided to ditch me in a park, let her two psycho coworkers try to kill me, and then vanish. Suddenly, I've got a dead Fallen Angel and a dead exorcist on my hands, and no one believes a regular human pulled it off. So, questions were asked. Now I'm stuck dealing with the Devils for the time being."
"Oh, my," Kalawarner gasped softly, though the feigned innocence was dripping with dark amusement. "I was wondering what happened to Dohnaseek. They never came back to the hideout. I suppose I should probably be saying thank you... though I'm a little sad I couldn't be there to watch you do it~"
"So," I said, ignoring the bait and steering the conversation back to the point. "Who is this 'little bird' of yours that's keeping tabs on me?"
"Mmm, that's exactly why I like you," Kalawarner said, letting out a soft, appreciative moan that made me grip the phone a little tighter. "You know how to play around with a girl... but when you get serious, you get serious."
The teasing edge vanished from her voice, replaced by a cold, calculating sharpness.
"But, onto business," she continued. "My little bird is a friend of yours."
My eyes widened slightly. I ran through the list of people I knew, my mind racing.
"She's short, quiet, blonde... and a nun." Kalawarner let out a dark chuckle. "Oh, you naughty little boy. We break up a few days ago, and not only are you already making the holy nun fall for you, but you're working your charm on that little brunette Devil as well~"
Asia.
The Fallen Angels had their eyes on Asia.
My grip on the phone tightened until the plastic casing creaked. "Why are you telling me this, Kalawarner?"
"Because," her voice dropped, losing all its teasing warmth. The sound was suddenly dark, dripping with genuine venom. "I hate it when people decide to take things that don't rightfully belong to them. And this... this is exactly what is happening. Someone is getting their filthy hands on something I like. And now, they're going to pay."

[Isabella's POV - Flashback]
The atmosphere in the Occult Research Club was suffocatingly tense.
After the incident at the warehouse, Rias was absolutely furious. I had never seen the President so angry. When we got back, she immediately laid into Kiba and Koneko for engaging Shiro without permission, but Koneko got the absolute worst of it for directly disobeying a stand-down order.
"One hundred strikes with the wooden practice sword during training," Rias had ordered, her cyan eyes flashing with strict authority. "Furthermore, you are banned from eating any sweets or chocolate for the rest of the week. And the next time you see Shiro, you will apologize to him properly."
Koneko had looked absolutely devastated at the chocolate ban, hanging her head in defeat, but she didn't argue.
Once the scolding was finally over and the tension started to bleed out of the room, everyone grabbed their bags to head out on their respective Devil contracts for the night. I had planned on just going home, my mind still racing from watching Shiro absolutely dismantle a mutated monster without breaking a sweat, but Rias stopped me at the door.
"Isa," Rias said, her expression softening back into her usual gentle demeanor. She handed me a small, circular device that looked like a high-tech compass. "You also have a job tonight. A client used one of our summoning flyers. The GPS will take you right to the location. Do you think you can handle it?"
I swallowed my nerves, giving her a firm nod. "Yes, Buchou! Leave it to me!"
I bowed, practically sprinting out of the old school building, hopped onto my bicycle, and pedaled off into the night. I was finally going to do actual Devil work!
…
It took me forever to navigate the winding suburban streets, but eventually, the blinking red dot on the GPS led me to a large, modern-looking, two-story house.
I parked my bike on the sidewalk and walked up the paved driveway. It looked like a completely normal, wealthy family home, but the moment I stepped onto the porch, a cold shiver ran up my arms. All the lights were off. The entire property was completely pitch black.
"Hello?" I called out softly, knocking on the heavy wooden door. "You summoned a Devil...?"
To my surprise, the door wasn't latched. The force of my knock pushed it open with a slow, ominous creak. The hallway inside was entirely unlit, swallowing the moonlight from the open door.
"Hello? Is anyone home?" I asked, my voice trembling just a little bit.
I checked the GPS device again. The dot was right on top of me. I was definitely at the right house. Mustering up as much courage as I could, I took a deep breath, stepped over the threshold, and walked down the dark hallway.
Everything just felt... wrong. The house was brand new, the wallpaper pristine, but the silence was deafening. It felt heavy. I kept my hands out in front of me, inching my way toward the back of the house where the hallway opened up into a large living room and dining area.
I took another step forward, not watching my feet.
Squelch.
My shoe hit a puddle. It didn't sound like water. It was thick, sticking slightly to the sole of my sneaker.
"Gross," I muttered, wrinkling my nose. "Who summons a Devil and doesn't even clean up their spilled drinks..."
