Chapter 33: The Persuader

The meteor signature was wrong.

I noticed it first at the Talon—a faint ping at the edge of my Meteor Sense, there and gone so fast I almost dismissed it as imagination. But it came back. Again and again, always brief, always when certain people were nearby.

"Something's different," I told Kara during our Tuesday coffee date. "People are acting strange."

"Strange how?"

"Mrs. Henderson from the grocery store gave away her entire savings to a homeless shelter. Mr. Patterson signed his business over to his nephew—the nephew he hasn't spoken to in ten years. A student at school handed her car keys to a stranger in the parking lot."

Kara frowned. "That sounds like—"

"Mind control. Or something close to it."

[PATTERN ANALYSIS: BEHAVIORAL ANOMALIES CORRELATE WITH METEOR SIGNATURE PROXIMITY. RECOMMEND: INVESTIGATION.]

I tracked the signature for two days. It appeared at each incident site—sometimes before, sometimes during, never after. Whoever was doing this was smart enough to leave before anyone realized what had happened.

On the third day, I found him.

His name was Alex Chen—a junior I'd seen around school but never really noticed. Quiet, unremarkable, the kind of person who blended into crowds without trying.

I approached him in the hallway between classes.

"Alex."

He turned, and I saw the moment he recognized me. Something flickered in his eyes—surprise, then calculation.

"Cole Harrison." His voice was pleasant, friendly. Too friendly. "I've heard about you."

"I've heard about you too."

[WARNING: METEOR SIGNATURE INTENSIFYING. PSYCHIC WAVELENGTH DETECTED.]

"Give me your wallet."

The command hit like a warm wave—soft, inviting, reasonable. Why wouldn't I give him my wallet? It was such a simple thing. He was asking so nicely.

But beneath the warmth, I felt something else. The System, activating defenses I hadn't known I had.

[PSYCHIC INTRUSION DETECTED. COUNTERMEASURE DEPLOYED. INTRUSION NEUTRALIZED.]

The compulsion shattered like glass.

"No."

Alex's expression shifted from confident to confused.

"Give me your wallet," he repeated, more forcefully this time. I could feel the power behind it—stronger now, more insistent.

It washed over me like water over stone.

"I said no."

Fear crept into his eyes. Real fear, the kind that came from encountering something that shouldn't exist.

"That's not possible. Nobody can—"

I stepped forward. He stepped back.

"Whatever you're doing to people, it stops now."

"Stay away from me!"

He turned and ran, shoving through students who parted instinctively. I could have chased him—probably could have caught him—but the hallway was too crowded. Too many witnesses.

[TARGET FLEEING. PURSUIT NOT RECOMMENDED IN CURRENT ENVIRONMENT.]

I let him go.

"You're immune?"

Kara's voice carried equal parts surprise and concern. We were in the Kent barn, away from any listening devices, processing what had happened.

"Apparently." I flexed my hands, still feeling the ghost of Alex's power against my mind. "The System blocked it. Said something about countermeasures."

"That's... that's significant." She paced the length of the barn, thinking out loud. "Psychic abilities are rare among meteor-affected individuals. Resistance to them is even rarer."

"The System provides protection." I'd been turning this over since the confrontation. "Not just physical enhancement—mental defense too. Whatever it did to my brain when it activated, it made me resistant to outside influence."

"Or immune entirely."

"We won't know until someone else tries."

Clark had been listening from the hayloft, processing in his own way.

"This Alex," he said, climbing down. "He's been manipulating people for how long?"

"At least two weeks that I can confirm. Probably longer."

"And nobody noticed?"

"His power doesn't leave marks. The victims don't remember being compelled—they just think they made bad decisions." I shook my head. "It's perfect, really. No evidence, no witnesses, no way to prove anything happened."

"Except you." Clark's expression was grim. "You felt it. You resisted."

"Which means I'm the only one who can confront him safely."

[TACTICAL ASSESSMENT: HOST IMMUNITY PROVIDES UNIQUE ADVANTAGE AGAINST PSYCHIC OPPONENTS. RECOMMEND: CAPITALIZE.]

Kara stopped pacing.

"You're not facing him alone."

"I won't have to." I looked at Clark. "His power works through voice. If we can prevent him from speaking—"

"I can move fast enough to cover his mouth before he finishes a sentence." Clark nodded slowly. "But I'd need to know exactly where he is."

"That's my job. I can track his meteor signature, and I'm immune to his commands. I approach, identify his location, signal you." I pulled out my phone. "Chloe's already researching him. We'll know his patterns by tonight."

"And then?"

"Then we take him down. Together."

Clark extended his hand.

"Partners."

I shook it.

"Partners."

The research came together faster than expected.

Chloe found Alex's file—troubled home life, history of being overlooked and dismissed, the kind of background that bred resentment. The meteor rock exposure had happened during a car accident three months ago. His abilities had manifested shortly after.

"He's been building a collection," Chloe said, spreading photos across the Torch office desk. "All the people he's influenced—they're not random. He's targeting authority figures, wealthy individuals, people with resources. He's building a power base."

"For what?"

"I don't know yet. But whatever he's planning, he's been very patient about it."

Patience. The most dangerous kind of villain—the kind who thought ahead.

"We move tomorrow," I decided. "Before he has time to realize I'm a threat."

My phone buzzed. Text from Clark: I have an idea. Meet at the farm.

I gathered the files, thanked Chloe, and headed out into the February evening.

The game was about to change again. But this time, I had backup.
