Chapter 9 - A New Beginning

The morning sun bathed the cobblestone streets of the capital of the Kingdom of Shadowfall in golden light. Alex walked beside Slyther, the captain of the royal guard, heading toward the central plaza. As they moved forward, his eyes wandered across the surroundings in quiet amazement.

He had heard countless stories about Shadowfall—a feared kingdom, branded an enemy by neighboring nations, described as a cursed and fallen land.

Yet the reality before him was completely different.

Shops were open. Children ran through the streets laughing. People helped one another carry goods or repair their homes. There were no signs of despair or fear. Though the kingdom had been reduced almost entirely to its capital, its spirit remained unbroken. On the faces of its citizens shone determination—a steel-like will to move forward despite everything they had endured.

It was as if the people had grown accustomed to suffering… without ever allowing it to steal their hope.

"It's surprising, isn't it?" Slyther said, noticing Alex's expression. "This kingdom has endured more than most can imagine. Enemy nations see us as monsters, but the truth is, we're just a people struggling to survive."

"It doesn't look like a kingdom devastated by war," Alex replied, still stunned. "The people don't seem depressed."

Slyther nodded, a smile filled with pride forming on his face.

"That's thanks to Andras-sama. She has kept hope alive within our people. She doesn't just protect us—she ensures that we keep moving forward. She gave us something worth fighting for… something to believe in."

Alex fell silent, absorbing those words. He knew Andras was powerful and enigmatic, but only now did he truly understand the impact she had on her people.

Before long, they arrived at the central plaza.

It was overflowing with people. Dozens—hundreds—stood waiting in anticipation. At the center stood Andras in her princess form, alongside Celes and Mayuri. When Alex appeared, a murmur swept through the crowd, filled with excitement and curiosity.

Andras stepped forward. Her posture was dignified and elegant, though Alex could see the tension in her gaze. She was nervous… but resolute.

"Alex," she said, her voice firm yet gentle. "My people have been awaiting your arrival for a long time. This kingdom has suffered for centuries under the threat of the false gods and the nations that worship them. All of our hopes rest upon you… that you will help us restore peace and glory to our kingdom… and to the world itself."

The weight of those words struck Alex heavily.

He had accepted his role in the coming war, but now, surrounded by the expectant faces of the people, he truly understood what it meant.

"Your first mission will be crucial," Andras continued. "You must travel to the first kingdom and seek an alliance. The journey will be long and dangerous. You will face enemies and creatures that will do everything in their power to stop you. Furthermore, you must find a way to secure resources for Shadowfall. Hope alone is not enough to wage war."

Alex nodded slowly, fully grasping the magnitude of the task.

But something else caught his attention.

Mayuri stood silently beside Andras, her expression unusually serious. There was worry on her face… and something more, as if she didn't want to part from him.

Alex leaned closer to Andras and whispered something into her ear.

The effect was immediate.

Andras flushed visibly. Then, regaining her dignified posture, she spoke again.

"Mayuri… you will also receive a mission. And if you complete it before Alex does… you will earn a date with me."

For an instant, Andras's face turned even redder, and her figure wavered, almost reverting to her demonic form. Her embarrassment was unmistakable.

But in Mayuri, those words ignited something entirely different.

"I'll finish before him!" she exclaimed, her eyes shining with determination. "Don't worry, Andras-sama! I'll be the one to secure the alliance first!"

Alex smiled, swept up by the sudden surge of energy.

"Then it's a deal," he replied, meeting her gaze with a faintly challenging smile.

From a short distance away, Slyther let out a quiet chuckle.

"This will be an interesting journey…" he murmured.

Alex's journey had only just begun, yet he already felt the weight of responsibility on his shoulders. Still, he was ready to face whatever lay ahead. For Andras. For her people. For the peace of the world.

The plaza erupted into cheers. The crowd celebrated Alex's arrival as though he were a hero foretold by ancient prophecies. Laughter, shouts, and applause echoed as he struggled to fully grasp the scale of his mission.

Mayuri, in contrast, maintained a defiant stance.

"You don't stand a chance," she said with a mischievous grin, crossing her arms. "My mission will be harder… and that just makes it more interesting."

"We'll see about that," Alex replied calmly, though inside him, a spark of competitiveness began to awaken.

Andras, still slightly flushed, tried to compose herself. Her eyes briefly met Alex's, as if seeking reassurance. Then she turned to the crowd.

"My people!" she declared. "Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for Shadowfall. With Alex by our side, we will restore the glory that was once ours and free the world from the tyranny of the false gods. His mission will be difficult, but we trust in his strength and courage."

Applause thundered once more.

Alex felt the weight of countless gazes upon him. He wasn't used to such attention… but he knew he could not fail.

Slyther approached and placed a firm hand on his shoulder.

"It will be a long journey," he said quietly. "Trust in your abilities. Andras-sama believes in you."

Alex nodded.

This wasn't just about alliances or money. It was about restoring dignity to a kingdom that refused to fade away.

"The road will be dangerous," Slyther continued as they left the plaza behind. "Dark forests, forgotten lands, creatures many believe to be mere legends… but it will also be your chance to prove what you're capable of."

"I hope so," Alex replied, gazing toward the horizon.

From the plaza, Andras, Celes, and Mayuri watched him depart, their expressions a mixture of hope and concern.

Hours Later — Inside the Castle

The throne room was silent.

Andras had called for a private meeting with her closest allies. Celes reviewed maps and documents with a calculating expression, while Mayuri leaned against a wall, idly twirling a small dagger between her fingers.

"Alex has potential," Andras said softly, "but I fear we may be underestimating the obstacles he will face."

"I know," Celes replied. "But we have no alternative. Without alliances, the false gods will annihilate us."

"And besides," Mayuri added with a confident smile, "if he runs into trouble, I'll always be there to prove that I'm better."

Andras smiled, though deep down she knew what was at stake was far greater than any of them could predict.

When the meeting ended and the throne room stood empty once more, Andras remained alone before the map of the kingdom.

"Please… succeed," she whispered.
