Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: Recovery

"What do you mean by dangerous?! I am not leaving my hammer out there. It's the last thing Father forged for me before we left." Bjorn said indignantly. But Magnus's grip on his arm did not relent. "What if those assassins are still there? Do you want to end up like Drakkus?!" The frustration in his voice was clear. Why did his brother have to be such an idiot?

"Hey, what's that approaching the fort?" Bjorn pointed downward from their vantage on the walls. Where, among the sea of corpses, a single man was slowly approaching with a limp. One of the sentries spotted him as well. Within seconds, an arrow shot out and struck the approaching man directly in the shoulder. The blow caused him to stumble slightly, but he continued walking nonetheless. "Hold your fire, idiot! What if he is one of ours?" A fellow sentry spoke after smacking him over the head. "I'll go get one of the captains and they can decide what to do."

All the while, Magnus's eyes were glued to the stranger. Beneath all the dried blood and caked mud was something familiar. The figure tripped over a corpse, falling face-first into the muddy ground, pushing the arrow deeper into his shoulder. It took a while before he gained the strength to stand back up. When the stranger came close enough to make out his features, Magnus's eyes widened in recognition. In a moment of recklessness, he jumped off the wall. Aura strengthened his legs, preventing damage. He landed with a thud before charging forward. And sure enough, when he grew close, he became sure that it really was him. Magnus grimaced when he saw the dagger sticking out of his chest and the still bleeding wound. Without a second thought, he moved to his side and helped support his weight.

After a few meters of walking, he felt the weight on his shoulder increase as Drakkus's condition worsened. "Open the gate damnit! My captain is wounded." He shouted to the sentries watching from above.

"I… I'm sorry… 'gasp' I… could not save them," Drakkus mumbled in a delirious state.

"Everythings going to be ok, just hold on. We are almost there." Magnus tried to soothe him, but he realized that Drakkus was not completely there. Gently placing him against the wall, he moved to the gate to see what the damn holdup was. After a short back and forth with the guards, the gate finally opened. Magnus was still conversing with the guards when he heard the thumping of footsteps behind him. He saw the soldier's eyes widen when Drakkus walked past. "How is he even alive?" One of the guards whispered.

Turning to he saw as Drakkus entered the fort looking like death itself. Having gained strength from somewhere. He walked with perfect posture, and his eyes were still cloudy. But if not for the wounds and weapons sticking out of him, you would have assumed he was a dead man. Dried blood tinted his hair and armor red as he walked into the fortress. Everyone who saw him stopped in their tracks as something about him drew everyone's attention. Drakkus stood for an uncomfortable amount of time. The only movement on his body was the blood dripping from his wounds. When Magnus went to check on him, he noticed that Drakkus was completely unresponsive. He was relieved that he was still alive, but somehow he passed out standing on his feet. "Stop gawking and get a fucking medic!" Colonel Bargrave shouted at the soldiers.

He had come out to see what all the commotion was about. Only to stumble onto an interesting scene. The little pup had balls even he had to admit as such. Slight irritation washed over him. It would have made his life so much easier if the bastard had died there. But now that he has made such a spectacle of his return. He could not just remove him quietly without people asking questions. Sighing, Colonel Bargrave went to his office to make a call to his benefactor. To alert them of his failure.
