Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: Dinner at Wayne Manor

When school was dismissed, Dean packed his bag as usual and was about to leave when Dick, who was sitting behind him, suddenly called out to him.

"Hey! Dean, wait a second."

Dean turned around and looked at him, asking curiously, "Is something wrong?"

"This might sound a bit sudden, but… do you have time tonight?"

Dick scratched his head, sounding a little hesitant.

"Uh… can I say no?"

Dean's eyelids twitched wildly.

"Actually, I was planning to invite you to Wayne Manor for dinner and to talk about the spring break school dance performance. You know, the only talent I have is aerial acrobatics, but that's too dangerous and requires professional equipment, so it's not suitable for a school performance."

Dick coughed twice and admitted frankly.

"So, I was wondering if you could teach me a few fun magic tricks to win over the girls."

After listening to Dick's explanation, Dean showed a look of sudden realization, then stared at him with disdain.

"I understand, but if you want to have fun with the girls at the dance, aren't you afraid your girlfriend will see you? Speaking of which, which one is your girlfriend now? Raya? Elton? Corley? Or Jenny? Maybe all of them? I didn't think much of it before, but now that I think about it, Dick, you really are a scumbag."

"Hey, hey, hey! Stop saying such old-fashioned things, okay? This is the era of free love, breaking up and getting back together is normal! I haven't done anything wrong, how am I a scumbag? You're making it sound like I'm strange."

Dick argued for himself, then looked at Dean with a disdainful expression.

"Someone like you, who's about to graduate high school and has never had a girlfriend, is the real weirdo, okay?"

"I just don't understand, so many girls have confessed to you, why don't you try picking a few and getting along well with them?"

At this point, Dick looked Dean up and down suspiciously.

"You're not…."

"Shut up!"

Dean's face was full of black lines, and he immediately stopped him sharply.

In the years since he transmigrated, almost ninety percent of his personal time had been dedicated to training his Kaito Kid skills, just to get the system rewards early and strive to survive future major events. Where would he have time to date those underage schoolgirls?

"Relax, buddy, I was just kidding."

Dick quickly put on a smile, then looked at Dean expectantly: "The school dance is scheduled for March 12th, and I don't have much time left to prepare a performance. So please, you must come to my house today. As a token of my gratitude, I'll have Alfred prepare a lavish dinner."

"We've been friends for so many years, help me out, okay?"

"…"

Dean was silent for a few seconds, then finally shook his head helplessly and said, "Alright, I'll teach you a few simple and practical magic tricks, but your feast must satisfy me."

"How about this, before we go, I'll go home first and grab some magic props…"

Before he could finish, Dick directly interrupted him.

"No need! Wayne Manor has plenty of substitutes. Time is precious, let's go now. Alfred should already be here to pick me up."

Dick grabbed Dean and ran towards the school gate, giving Dean no chance to speak.

Dean, being pulled forward by Dick, narrowed his eyes slightly. He didn't believe that Dick's sudden invitation to Wayne Manor was truly for learning magic.

Dick is Robin, Batman's personal disciple, taught hand-in-hand. Does he still need someone to teach him magic tricks for picking up girls? Even if he can't compare to a specialized magician, it's more than enough to fool those innocent young girls at school.

Clearly, Dick was testing him, though Dean wasn't sure yet what method Dick intended to use for the test.

Dean's face remained expressionless, pretending he knew nothing, while his mind constantly simulated possible upcoming situations and how to deal with them.

At the entrance, Alfred was indeed already waiting by a luxury car for Dick to appear.

When he saw the two of them, Dean noticed a momentary flash of surprise in Alfred's eyes when he saw Dean.

Clearly, he was unaware of Dick's plan to test Dean.

"It seems the one suspecting my identity is Batgirl, it's good that Batman isn't back," Dean thought to himself.

When Dean had previously eavesdropped on Dick's conversation, he couldn't hear the sound from Dick's headphones, so he couldn't determine the other person's exact identity.

Even if he excluded Alfred based solely on Dick's words, he couldn't immediately confirm it was Batgirl.

Because the possibility of Batman suddenly returning couldn't be ruled out. The Justice League possesses unique space-teleportation technology on Earth, and Batman can return to Gotham anytime, anywhere, without any warning.

Dean really didn't want to confront this DC "biological father," who was praised by countless people in his previous life, so early.

The good news was that it could now be confirmed. If Batman was suspecting him, Alfred would definitely know about the plan to have Dick test him, and might even be an important part of the plan.

In that case, Alfred wouldn't have been surprised the moment he saw Dean, or if he was, it would have been a feigned surprise after contact.

The problem now was, why would Batgirl suspect him?

Dean pondered, even Dick, with whom he had the most contact, hadn't suspected him.

How could Batgirl, whom he had never even met, find him suspicious?

This suspicion absolutely couldn't be baseless. In Gotham City, there were at least twenty professional magicians who met Kaito Kid's criteria, and countless amateur street performers. What evidence did Batgirl have to suspect Dean?

There was only one possibility: Dean had already come into contact with Batgirl, and because of certain characteristics, she became suspicious of him.

The women he had recently come into contact with…

Suddenly, Dean recalled meeting Barbara at the library earlier.

If it was a connection made by linking the Roman elements in the Notice box (pre-notice letter) with his own research into Roman-related books, that would make complete sense.

Dean had previously suspected three people might be Batgirl: Betty Kane, Bruce Wayne's younger cousin; Julia Pennyworth, Alfred's daughter; and finally, Barbara Gordon.

Initially, Dean thought Betty was the most likely, given her close relationship with the Wayne Family.

Now it seemed Barbara was the real Batgirl.

Just as Dick was explaining to Alfred that he wanted to invite Dean to Wayne Manor for dinner, on the other side—

A dark figure was gradually approaching Thurston Mansion…
