At twelve minutes past midnight, the Regina Grand Council Chamber no longer resembled the seat of royal authority it had been built to represent, because the marble beneath the council dais had split apart and revealed a darkness from which a colossal crimson eye now watched the living world above it. The ancient chamber shook beneath every breath of the creature below, sending dust from the carved pillars and trembling through the chandeliers while council members clung to tables, chairs, and one another in an effort to remain standing.
