Under her foot, the floor let out a creak, but my eyes never left the shaky screen. In slipped a thread of light, floating behind her like mist, the phone's brightness slicing the blackness.
"Okay, so I just ran into Jayce in the hallway," she said, dropping her bag. "He looks like someone kicked his puppy. What happened after I left?"
"I told him I'm not in love with him." I didn't look up from my phone. "That I still love Daniel."
A shiver cut across her chest, sudden and bright. From where she lay half off the bed, stillness took hold. Silence piled up, shaped by what came next. All that followed depended on how he stepped forward.
"Better than I deserved. He was really sweet about it. Told me I should figure things out with Daniel." I finally looked at her. "Then he left and probably went somewhere to cry."
"And how do you feel about that?"
"Guilty. Sad. Like I'm the worst person alive." I sat up. "But also relieved? Because at least now he knows. At least I was honest."
