Something cracked against the door near midnight.
Frozen beneath the covers, thoughts caught on Lucas's kiss - how hollow it felt - then a sharp bang against my door snapped the silence. The knocks came hard, as if whoever stood there wanted nothing but to break through.
Elsewhere found her pacing at his side. My world held nothing but quiet.
The door gave way when I touched it. Light poured in while wind rushed through.

Out of nowhere, his hair jutted in wild clumps - as if yanked repeatedly by invisible hands. Slanting sideways, the tie dangled, one loop frayed. Shadows made his gaze twitch, never settling, always moving. Could be drink humming under his skin. Then again, perhaps whatever held him together simply broke loose.
Possibly both.
It started with that question. No greeting came before it. Nothing about her day. Just straight forward. As if the reply was clear to her all along.
