I heard about Daniel at a party.
It was a book launch for one of Sarah Chen's authors, a prolific writer on trauma and recovery, and the soiree was held at a lovely independent bookstore in Capitol Hill. There was a gathering of writers, publishers, journalists, and critical thinkers who gravitated towards the place, sipping wine and discussing literature and ideas.
I was there to support Sarah, but also because I loved these kinds of events. I loved being around people who engaged with ideas, who tried to understand human nature and the universe, who could communicate that understanding in a beautiful way.
As I stood at the wine table, chatting with some of the regulars, Dr. Rachel Kim caught my eye and beckoned me over. She had a strange look on her face as she steered me away from the main party room.
"I ran into someone at the University of Washington the other day," she said. "Someone I think you'd be interested in hearing about."
