Chapter 10 - Chapter 9: Trait

Moriah's will vanished without a single trace like she were never there. The colourless grey space that was like reality had suspended in her wake saturated back to the usual colour of my bedroom, and a sense of surrealism overpowered my senses.

All that was left was a glowing UI with green characters staring back at me from the mirror over the table. I stared seemingly into mid-air and blinked.

"Is this an interface...?"

It was, wasn't it? The familiar and famous 'Status Screen'. A pale, green interface hovering in mid air next to my face hummed quietly. My mind instantly raced with possibilities and questions; was this the System Moriah's Will repeatedly talked about?

But didn't she say due to the nature of my transmigration, i was exempt from the guidance and perks of the System? The Heroes, who were directly brought from other worlds were the only beings who possessed active influence over it.

So what was suddenly before me right now certainly couldn't be a System. It suddenly appeared after Moriah's Will vanished, so could this be one of the setups the Goddess of Fate and Luck had installed for me?

I was soon about to find out.

Staring curiously at the translucent green screen, the characters immediately drew my interest more than the purpose. After all, it wasn't everyday you woke up to see a status screen about yourself.

I noticed while the strange and unfamiliar screen reminiscent of a UI seemingly hovered in mid air, it was because it actually reflected off the mirror sitting in from of me.

I deliberately swept my fingers through the air across my face, trying to see if i could directly physically interact with the interface. But just as i partly expected, nothing happened.

Then i leaned back against my seat with a deeply contemplative expression wearing my face.

"It's a reflection." I acknowledged.

I confirmed this by looking away from my reflection and the mirror. The green characters didn't appear within my line of sight the moment i did, and only reappeared once i turned back to the mirror.

My lips curled with amusement.

'...This is new?'

Setting that aside, i finally turned to what the screen said; the green letters and characters glowing and shimmering.

The instance i focused all of my attention on it, the simple green tab instantly unfurled and expanded. Longer streams of words and characters i couldn't immediately understand formed in mid air, they shimmered like runes from a dream.

My eyes rounded instantly at what i saw. Not even the tenacious grace of the original Ramiel could stop me from gaping this badly

My stats were incredible. Ramiel's, i mean.

They were abysmal.

Calmly taking in the details of the stats reflected off the mirror and laid out in front of me, i slowly began to make sense of some of them using the inherited knowledge of the original Ramiel. Crossed along with the bits and pieces Moriah and her Will revealed over time, i calmly understood what most of the information i was looking at meant.

It was like a stroke of intuitive knowledge and understanding. Perhaps it had something to do with [Intuition], but the information on the status screen didn't feel as overwhelming the more i stared at it.

In fact, the longer i calmly went through it, aside from the abysmal numbers of Ramiel's stats, the more sense they made.

"So basically..." I heaved a quiet sigh, regaining composure.

A certain grounded sort of calm settled into my mind as i relaxed backwards against my chair, making sense of the bits and pieces of my thoughts.

It didn't take long for me to map out a general narrative of it all.

[Traits] were a Uniqueness of the creatures of this world. An [Inherent Trait] was a Unique characteristics and ability of a being; in other words, it was the inborn ability of a person and the Soul.

This was what Moriah's will was talking about. Every native of this world technically possessed one [Inherent Trait], since they possessed a soul after all. After that it was all a matter of whether or not that ability of the Soul manifests outwardly as a Uniqueness.

And as for how did i know this? Simple, really; Ramiel's memories.

The nature and existence of Unique Traits weren't exactly rare or state secret. It was quite the opposite in fact; this was considered general knowledge in all parts of this world.

But here's the thing...

I quickly found a discrepancy in Ramiel's original memories. Up until now a lot of the thoughts and feelings i inherited from the original were at most a little vague and foggy, or outright stubborn, like this body's habits—

But Ramiel's memories up until now have been more or less consistent to everything I've faced so far.

Except for one little detail...

"Ramiel didn't have a Trait." My lips parted slowly.

****

In the memories i inherited, Ramiel didn't have a Trait, but now the status screen was describing something different.

The concept and ability of Traits weren't unusual in this world, although not everyone possessed one of their own. Some people managed to awaken their's under different conditions, while others spend their entire lives without recognising their innate ability of their soul.

After seeing the Status screen describing Traits, this led me to believe that Ramiel fell among those who didn't possess an [Inherent Trait], or at least, he had yet to awaken one.

Until now...

I spent the next half of the entire day wrapping my head around the System screen, making sense of Ramiel's abysmal stats, Traits, and mysterious Blessings.

Although...i guess now i should call them 'my' abysmal Stats, because first of all, it was clear i was going to have to do something about them.

I guess this was what Moriah meant by i have to grow stronger... 'I have my work cut out for me,' I sighed heavily remembering the negative digits.

But first before that, there were a couple of things to highlight and take note of, ever since i could see the runes of my attributes.

First of all, it wasn't a System Interface; It was a Status Window.

I wasn't Transmigrated into Ramiel's body and suddenly possessed a widely popular System that offered my skills, powers, perks and special abilities.

No, Moriah decided that would be too broken for me... Tsk.

After spending close to an hour studying and throwing every Keyword at the mirror, i came to the cold, grounded and slightly disappointing realisation that it was no more than a window that showed my stats in numbers.

The Status Window represented the physical and innate aspects of my being in the form of mystical runes and characters, which on a normal basis, i had no concern being able to read or understand what they meant.

They didn't appear in the typical letters of English, or any other language i could at least remotely recognise from Earth. Yet the moment i set my eyes on the mysterious characters, i could immediately read and comprehend them.

It was the same way i could instinctively speak and understand the language of this world the moment i woke up in Ramiel's body — which, mind you, was also a different body of words than from Earth.

'This could either be from inheriting Ramiel's memories, knowledge and habits, or as a result of one of Moriah's influence ensuring a smooth transition between my being from Earth and into this world.'

But i also couldn't recognize any familiarity between the runes in the original Ramiel's memories, which led me to better lean in on the latter.

Moving on...

Secondly, in addition to the runes merely being a Status Window, i could only access them and view my stats and attributes through the use of a reflection.

It wasn't just limited to the mirror in my bedroom; i found out literally almost every reflective surface could let me access my stats window, so this also wasn't a traditional Status Screen which i could only summon in my mind or directly before my retinas.

After thorough experimentations and visual testing, i discovered that was how the Status Window worked as I've described.

As for the terms and details that appeared each time i summoned their reflections, those were an entirely different matter and related with the nature of this new world.

It was a mystical world with a preternatural design where the likes of Knights, Heroes, and legends were commonplace, unlike on Earth where the likes of were considered fantasy and often found in storybooks.

For now, let's just say: the natives of this world at a certain age manifest a certain innate ability called an [Inherent Trait] as I've already explained earlier. But they also awaken special Affinities, and ultimate ability to use Mana.

There were all sorts and different applications and highlights, but to be summed up, those who can harness Mana and therefore venture into the Arts, they were called The Awakened, or Practitioners for a more legal term.

Ramiel of Montclairre was a shocking Tier 0 Awakened with two Elemental Affinities — Earth and Fire — and one Conceptual Affinity; Fate...but we'll get to that.

It was an hour after sunset, and i stared grimly my reflection in the mirror. With a mental shrug, I dismissed the runes of my Status Window floating off my reflection.

With a tired and heavy sigh, my shoulders slumped in my seat, and i heard Moriah's words repeat again in my head, finally making sense. The silence of the night around me felt stuffy.

"I have my work cut out for me."

***

The next day, i was still in the process of gradually adjusting to my new reality. Especially now with the new information Moriah's will unloaded against me yesterday, and the appearance of my status screen.

Even after spending weeks as Ramiel, the idea that i used to be someone else and this was an entirely new and different world was still very present.

And today, quite early in the day, while the season was on the crusp of transition from Spring to early summer, i stood outside in the massive courtyard of the manor. The sun had already risen high and bright.

I barely found shade under a tree, hiding beneath its crown and within the cool comfort of the shadow on standby. In one hand next to me as a folded black umbrella. Before me a half naked figure of a young man danced around with a wooden broad sword in the open field.

He spun, pivoted, twisted and cut through the air leaving whistling sounds along the paths his wooden blade cut. Arthur my master had been going about his training for over the past hour now. His well chiseled and sculpted torso glistened with rolling lean muscles under silky skin made greasy from sweat.

His bright golden yellow hair caught the sunlight like a halo, and his feet kept shifting through the trimmed grass in a dance of mesmerising footwork.

When Arthur said he was going to step out for his morning exercise, i said to myself 'Oh, okay. Makes sense,' i mean, that Roman god physique had to be maintained and did come from somewhere, right?

But then the blonde haired adonis yanked out a wooden sword and began swinging like a madman. For someone like me from the more civilised 21st century, it was hard to take the guy seriously after that.

But this wasn't the 21st century, and i was no longer on Earth. At best, this world had concepts closer to the late middle ages, or early Victorian era. And according to fragments of the original Ramiel's memories, this wasn't weird at all.

Arthur Baratheon D. Vermouth was a swordsman. A dedicated one at that. And his discipline showed through nearly every aspect of his living, including now.

At the same time i remember Ramiel, as well, was also supposed to be a Swordsman. Which meant, i was a Swordsman. I think.

The realisation made me stop making fun of Arthur after a while, and at some point, i began to look at Arthur's movements differently.
