Chapter 17 - Chapter 15.5: Commissioning the Aurealis Sprite

The East Blue morning was clear, the sun glinting off the small harbour where Maris had arranged to meet the shipwrights.

She stood atop the weathered dock, eyes tracing the outlines of unfinished hulls. Her hands held the sketches she had carried for weeks—detailed plans of a ship that would be her first vessel, her bridge to the world beyond Lunaris Island.

"This… will be ours," she whispered, smoothing out the pages as the salt breeze lifted stray strands of her black hair.

The Aurealis Sprite existed first in her mind: a compact, elegant caravel, built for a small crew, optimised for speed, manoeuvrability, and precision. Its winged guardian figurehead, turquoise-and-white Sky Silk sails, and flowing wind motifs were not just decoration—they reflected a philosophy. A vessel in harmony with the sea, responsive to its captain, and alive under her touch.

Beside her, a small team of skilled local shipwrights busied themselves. Each measured beams, carved planks, and tested rigging with meticulous care. Though they were quiet, their expertise was clear—crafting a vessel of this precision was no small task.

"Are you certain about the scale?" one asked, wiping his hands on a cloth. "A ship this nimble, for a small crew—will it handle long voyages?"

Maris' gaze never left the sketches. "It must. Every measurement, every curve, every detail has a purpose. It needs to respond to the wind as if it were alive. Can you do that?"

The shipwrights exchanged a glance. Then, with a firm nod, the lead craftsman said, "We'll make her fly."

Construction and Materials

The Aurealis Sprite was no ordinary vessel.

Keel: Adam Wood reinforced with Sea Steel, giving stability and durability even in rough currents.

Hull: Adam Wood reinforced with Sea Steel frames, lightweight yet resilient, ensuring the ship remained swift without sacrificing safety.

Deck Planks: Polished Calm Belt Hardwood, treated with a water-resistant varnish.

Masts: Flexible Skywood reinforced at critical points with Sea Steel for maximum sail efficiency.

Sails: Wind-enhancing, storm-resistant Sky Silk in turquoise and white, with subtle wind motifs.

Windows & Portholes: Transparent Crystal Glass, unbreakable yet clear, allowing natural light to fill the interior.

Rudder & Steering: Sea Steel and tempered Adam Wood for precise manoeuvring.

Ornamental Features: Carved from luminous hardwood with Sky Silk accents, blending beauty and resilience.

Exterior Features

Figurehead: A smaller winged guardian, elegant yet simple, with wings curving inward to symbolise guidance and protection rather than dominance. Subtle gold accents reflected the ideals of Maris's leadership.

Hull: Streamlined for speed, with deep blue and gold trim along the sides. Flowing wave motifs ran along the waterline, and the name Aurealis Sprite was engraved near the bow in elegant script.

Sails & Rigging: Single main mast with auxiliary sail. White sails adorned with light blue wind motifs, manageable by one or two people, and efficient even in light winds.

Deck: Compact, open space with a central helm and modest ship wheel. Minimal railing featured hooks for lanterns, and small planters of herbs and greenery added a touch of life and calm.

The Aurealis Sprite was built for freedom, speed, and exploration. Every space served multiple purposes.

It emphasised self-sufficiency, ease of handling, and efficiency for a small crew, feeling less like a warship and more like a travelling refuge. Spaces inspired calm, reflection, and a connection to nature while at sea.

For Maris, the Sprite was not just a vessel—it was the embodiment of independence, planning, and the first tangible step into a world beyond her hidden island.

By the time the hull gleamed under the sun and the Sky Silk sails were unfurled, Maris knew this small ship would carry her through her first coordinated bounty missions, her early adventures across the East Blue, and eventually toward building a crew and exploring the Grand Line.

She placed her hand on the winged figurehead.

"Let's fly," she whispered.

And for the first time, the Aurealis Sprite felt alive beneath her fingertips.
