Chapter 23: The Blueprint of Flavor
[Day 20: 06:00 AM]
Kael sat on the rough cedar planks of his porch, his legs dangling over the edge. The sun hadn't cleared the tree line of the Silent Death Forest yet, but the air was already heavy, tasting like wet metal and ozone.
Spread out around him on the wood were a dozen shallow trays he'd carved from soft bark. They weren't filled with gold or weapons. They were filled with something far more valuable to a man who had been eating salted meat for three weeks.
He held up a handful of tiny, boat-shaped seeds. They were brown, ridged, and smelled faintly of earth and warmth.
"Cumin( jeera)" Kael whispered.
He closed his eyes and inhaled. For a second, he wasn't in a forest full of monsters. He was back in the cramped kitchen of the Golden Sitar, the Indian restaurant where he'd worked prep shifts. He could smell the hot oil, hear the pop-pop-pop of mustard seeds hitting the pan, and feel the heat of the tandoor on his face.
opening his eyes Kael said. "If I plant these standard seeds now .I will have to wait very long before I get a harvest."
"Black Pepper takes three years and Cloves take five. I can't wait that long."
[Correct, Sir. Earth flora relies on slow mineral absorption. However, Eldoria's soil is saturated with high-density mana. If you modify the 'Metabolic Intake' of the seeds during Creation, you can force them to mature at an accelerated rate. Expect an 800% increase in growth speed.]
"That's the math I like."
Kael stood up, his joints popping. He packed the trays into his cedar crate. He had everything: Mustard for the tadka, Turmeric for the color, Chilies for the heat, and the heavy-hitters like Cardamom and Cloves for the aroma.
He hoisted the crate onto his shoulder. It was heavy, but the promise of flavor made it feel light.
[06:45 AM]
He walked the fifty meters down the slope to the trench. The path he'd cleared was already getting fuzzy with new green shoots. The forest didn't wait.
At the intersection, the "Singing Spikes" were humming their low, tooth-rattling song. Vrrrrm. Vrrrrm.
Kael grabbed the vine rope of his Pivot Bridge and leaned back, pulling the massive cedar logs down across the gap.
Thud.
He walked across into the fortress. 1.5 acres of potential. He headed straight for the South-West corner. Block 5.
[07:15 AM]
He started with the roots. The backbone of every curry.
He knelt in the dirt next to the raised ridges he'd built yesterday. He pulled out the Turmeric rhizomes he'd created. They looked like gnarled, orange fingers.
"You guys are the healers," Kael muttered. He knew the process: harvest, boil, dry, grind. It was a pain, but necessary.
He pressed the first rhizome into the soft, ash-mixed soil. Flat side down. Four inches deep. He covered it gently.
Next was the Ginger. The smell of the raw root on his hands was sharp and lemony. He planted them a foot apart, giving them room to spread. He could practically taste the tea he was going to make.
"Grow fat," Kael whispered, patting the dirt. "And grow spicy."
[09:00 AM]
He moved to the back edge of the block, near the treeline. He couldn't just plant seeds here; he needed structure.
He dug deep holes for the Cinnamon and Clove saplings he'd manifested. They were small now—barely two feet tall—but with the mana-boost, they would be bushes in a month and trees in a year.
"Windbreak," Kael said, packing the soil around the base of the Cinnamon tree. "You protect the chilies from the storm, and I'll harvest your bark for my rice."
Then came the Black Pepper. It was a vine. It needed something to climb.
Kael dragged three stalks of Iron-Bamboo over. He drove them into the ground in a tripod shape and tied the tops together with vine. He planted the pepper vine at the base.
"Climb," he commanded, wrapping the tiny green tendril around the bamboo. "Don't stop until you hit the top."
[11:30 AM]
The sun was high now, beating down on his neck. Kael wiped sweat from his eyes, leaving streaks of black mud on his face.
He moved to the center rows. This was the delicate work.
He sprinkled the Mustard seeds (Rai) into shallow furrows. These were fast—he'd have seeds for tempering in three weeks.
Next to them went the Coriander (Dhania) and Fenugreek (Methi). He needed the leaves just as much as the seeds. Fresh cilantro on a curry wasn't a garnish; it was essential.
Finally, the Red Chilies. He gave them their own row, separated from the rest. He didn't want the roots tangling. He wanted them to have space to get angry and hot.
[01:00 PM]
The physical planting was done. Block 5 was full. But the seeds were sleeping. They were Earth genetics in alien soil.
Kael walked to the ceramic irrigation canal he'd built. He sat down heavily in the mud, dipping his hands into the water.
"Absolute Creation: Biological Integration."
He didn't flash a beam of light. He pushed his Essence into the water. He felt it flow down the canals, seeping into the ridges, touching every single seed and root.
He visualized the water acting as a bridge. Drink, he told them. The mana isn't poison. It's food.
He felt the resistance—the forest soil trying to crush the weak Earth seeds. Kael clamped down. He forced his Essence to form a protective bubble around the roots, filtering the aggressive energy.
He held it for twenty minutes. His head throbbed. A trickle of blood ran from his nose.
When he finally let go, the soil in Block 5 seemed to hum. The seeds were safe. They were drinking.
[02:00 PM]
Kael stood up, swaying slightly. He wiped the blood from his lip.
He looked at Block 5. It was done. In a few weeks, this patch of dirt would smell like a spice market.
But then he turned and looked at the rest of the farm.
Block 1 (Potatoes) was empty.
Block 2 (Greens) was empty.
Block 3 (Lentils/Pulses) was empty.
Block 4 (Rice/Grains) was empty.
"Looks like I have to wait to build a proper kitchen yet," Kael realized, his stomach growling. "I have spices growing in the dirt… but nothing to cook them with. Not yet."
He looked at his hands, caked in mud.
"Tomorrow," Kael said to the empty fields. "Tomorrow we fill the rest of you."
He whistled for Noir. The panther trotted over from the shade of the bridge, yawning.
"Come on, buddy," Kael said, trudging back toward the house. "Another day of salted meat. But soon... soon we feast."
He glanced back at the farm where he just plants the seed.
He didn't know what he would cook when the spices grew. He hadn't decided it yet, and he had nothing else to cook except meat. But he will figure it out what he would cook in future.
