A deathly silence fell over the hall after the final strike of the gavel, as if time itself had stopped at the lips of Judge Nitcherin. Everyone awaited the word that would change the face of history, but the judge placed the document down slowly and looked at the audience with weary eyes.
Judge Nitcherin (in a deep, resonant voice):
"Due to the gravity of the verdict and the diverging opinions within the Council of Nobles, and based on Article 12 of the ancient Aetherian Constitution, the court announces a temporary recess for one hour for final deliberation. The accused is to be moved to the temporary detention room, and no noble is permitted to leave the hall's walls."
As soon as the judge exited the hall, the "Platform of Justice" transformed into a scene of whispering and unrest.
In the Nobles' Corner: The King's Broken Heart
King Ragos withdrew to a corner of the Grand Hall, surrounded by Count Silver and a group of senior advisors. The King's face appeared ten years older than it had before the session began.
Count Silver (whispering): "Your Majesty, the judge is leaning toward execution. The evidence presented against Peonil regarding his experiments on bio-aether leaves no room for mercy. You must be prepared to sign the execution decree as soon as it is issued."
King Ragos (closing his eyes in pain):
"Silver... I wanted justice, I did not want his blood. Peonil is a criminal, yes, but he is my son. If the judge sentences him to death, I will exercise my royal right to commute the sentence. I do not want him executed; I want him exiled to the furthest reaches of the Wastelands, where there is no energy and no Heart Stones. Killing will not erase the crimes; it will only increase Laura's malice and ignite a civil war within the palace."
One of the Nobles: "But Sire, exile might mean his return one day. The nobles loyal to him will wait for a moment of weakness to bring him back!"
Ragos: "Be that as it may. I will not be the King whom history records as having killed his son in cold blood to protect his throne. We will try to convince Nitcherin that exile is the most appropriate punishment to ensure the stability of Aetheria."
In the Detention Room: The Queen's Venom
On the other side, in the temporary detention room behind gilded bars, Queen Laura stood very close to Peonil, while Baron Croft and two military commanders stood guard.
Laura (in a low voice, her eyes burning with sparks):
"Listen to me carefully, Peonil, not a hair on your head will be touched. Ragos thinks he is playing the role of the just King, but he does not know that I will burn the ground beneath his feet."
Peonil (coldly): "Our dear father wants to exile me, Mother. I heard the whispers of his advisors. He thinks living in the wastes is punishment enough."
Laura: "You aren't going anywhere." (She turns to Baron Croft) "Baron, have you gathered what I asked of you?"
Baron Croft: "My Queen, we have encrypted correspondence intercepted days ago between the King's secret offices and sites belonging to Kayan. They speak of 'facilitating passage' and a 'handover agreement.' If we frame them correctly, Ragos will look like the one who opened Aetheria's gates to the Liberation Army to betray the nobles."
Laura (with a triumphant smile):
"Excellent. Go now, distribute these documents to the wavering nobles. Tell them that Ragos is not just; he is complicit. Tell them he is putting his son on trial to cover up his own high treason with the Liberation Army. If the nobles are convinced the King is a traitor, the judge's verdict will be worthless, and we will turn the trial from the trial of Peonil into the trial of Ragos!"
Peonil (laughing softly): "Brilliant wit... turning the tables at the last moment. While they discuss 'Justice,' we discuss 'Survival.'"
Laura: "I want tangible evidence, even if you have to forge some royal seals. The nobles must see that the Liberation Army did not get here through their own intelligence, but by an 'invitation' from the King himself."
The atmosphere grew charged once again as the time for the judge's return approached. The nobles in the hall began circulating small papers leaked by Laura's men, and the whispers started turning into looks of suspicion and accusation directed at King Ragos, who sat in his silence, unaware that his wife had set a trap that might strip him of his crown before the judge even pronounced the sentence on his son.
